About this listen

Learn about the science of Meteorites with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.A meteorite is a mass of stone or metal which has reached the earth’s surface from outer space. There are various names for a meteorite depending on where it is situated. While it is traveling in space, it is referred to as a “meteoroid”. When it passes through the earth’s atmosphere and produces a fiery streak in the sky, known as a “shooting star”, it is called a “meteor”. There are three basic types of meteorites: stone, iron, and stony-iron.

Because meteorites formed from the dust present during the creation of the solar system, they are on average around 4.5 billion years old. Their composition is, therefore, a record of past geologic processes which occurred while they were still part of their parent asteroid. As such, they are extremely helpful in assisting us with our understanding of the history of our universe. However, this field of study is still both difficult and speculative work.

Editor reviews

If you are looking to fill in gaps in your cultural, scientific, or historical knowledge, iMinds’ series of audiobooks - each one less than 10 minutes - is a great place to start. Each one is crisp and clear with a pleasing background soundtrack.

Meteorites, narrated by Luca James Lee, is a particularly fascinating instalment of the series. Giving the listener a quick background on the science of how meteorites are formed, what they are made of, and how old some of them might be, the audiobook then discusses some of the cultural importance of these identified flying objects. Did you know that meteorites were used for tools and then as objects of religious veneration?

Critic reviews

"I'm learning all sorts of stuff about stuff I didn't even know I didn't know. And it sticks. In a nutshell: wonderful." (Jonathon Margolis, Financial Times)
