About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts written and read by Christopher de Hamel.

This is a book about why medieval manuscripts matter. Coming face to face with an important illuminated manuscript in the original is rather like meeting a very famous person. We may all pretend that a well-known celebrity is no different from anyone else, and yet there is an undeniable thrill in actually meeting and talking to a person of world stature. The idea for this book, which is entirely new, is to invite the listener into an intimate conversation with a selection of the most famous manuscripts in existence and to let each of those manuscripts illuminate the Middle Ages and sometimes the modern world too.

Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts invites the listener to accompany the author on exclusive private visits to a dozen very varied collections, in different parts of the world, to discover 12 great manuscripts and to explore their historical and intellectual significance.

Utterly fascinating, but beware of the recording

While we should welcome and encourage recordings of such works, de Hamel's cloying (and frequently unclear) voice is not pleasant; there are also several inept and jarring edits.

Witty and charming

Christopher de Hamel is a wonderful reader of his own work: his enthusiasm, wit, and charm suffuse his narration of this book. Highly recommended.

A wonderful and enjoyable introduction to medieval manuscripts

I bought this on a whim and am so glad to have done so. I knew nothing of this subject beforehand but the reviews lured me in. Listening to this was like spending several hours in the company of an enthusiastic expert, generously sharing their wisdom and experience by a roaring fire. Comforting and fascinating without being at all dry or boring. I heartily recommend it.

This book was perfect.

From the superfluously tranquil narration to the fascinating stories of each manuscript featured here, I wholeheartedly loved every minute of it.

enjoyable erudition

I liked to listen to this meandering through medieval manuscripts late in the evening to relax before bed. The book itself is fascinating, but not exactly exciting. But the author's knowledge and enthusiasm comes across well.

Weirdly fulfilling

The sheer enthusiasm of the author / narrator Christopher de Hamel is enough to sell this book. He is fascinated by the details of the manuscripts and pulls you into an intricate world where it is important and interesting that the manuscript has 6 clasps 2 of which are broken!
It offers an amazing insight into the Medeival mind and snippets of otherwise hidden and unknowable history.
