About this listen

October 1143. A mysterious archer who kills cleanly and 'dissolves' into the forest, a missing train of pack mules on the salt road from Wich and a lord in the wrong place at the wrong time mean a crime the lord Sheriff of Worcestershire cannot ignore.

Bradecote, Catchpoll and the eager Walkelin are hunting a killer and a gang and whoever is giving them orders. They are not helped by a reeve keen to keep his position, a lord with his own ends to serve and a distrusting and vengeful widow with a haunted past, to whom Bradecote is increasingly attracted.

I've been reading these books in order After having read a lot of medieval mystery series and loved them. I was delighted to find these books and make friends with the characters. How cleverly the authors mixes pathos with humour and the narrator is excellent - the way he becomes each character. I hope Audible has the whole series. I hate it when they stop two books from the end of the series. Don't know why they do that! I should also say the adventures are great and what a character is Catchpole!

Is it optional or required? make up your mind.

A clever tale read by an outstanding narrator
Matt Addis brings this thrilling story to life
I am looking forward to more tales of the Undersheriff and his trusty men

This book did take a couple of tries for me to get into it, but it was worth the effort. A good story, with good characters worthy of being liked or hated as appropriate!

It was quite interesting to discover how things were dealt with in times gone by. I felt that it was a true historical setting, though I am no expert, it just felt right.

I will be interested to try more from this author.

Well worth a read

The relationship between Under-Sheriff and Sergeant gets better with each story. The details regarding life at that time and even how salt was made shows how much research has been done, and adds to a very enjoyable read.

Another great yarn from Sarah Hawkswood

In this third book Bradecote, Catchpoll, and Walkelin are on the trail of an archer who kills so wagons of salt can be stolen… but is he the mastermind or just a paid assassin.
As we travel outside of the city of Worcester to the town of Wich which is on the salt road we learn how important the salt trade was at that time. We meet characters that we would recognise today (bullies, puffed up politicians, and lewd in-laws).
I still find myself pulled so deep in the time period that as I finish the book I’m surprised to hear buses, cars, and trains that pass close by my home.
I can’t wait to read the next in the series (and luckily don’t have to as it’s already downloaded reading for me to hit play).

Murder and detection mediaeval style

I hope for further titles. I really like the development of these characters. Matt Addis is wonderful.

Most enjoyable.

I enjoyed this book I found it easy to listen to, interesting and without the violence that you find in some books, also no bad language which is a boon as some writers think it is a necessity.

A very enjoyable read easy to listen to.

I really enjoyed this story and got so caught up in it that I actually cried at the end! Matt Addis does an excellent job of narrating Sarah Hawkswood stories. Between them they take me back in time, so that I am there like a ghost watching it all unfold. More of the same please.

Really enjoyable

This, the third Bradicot and Catchpole book, lives up to the first two. The author takes the plot along at a good pace, the characters are rounded and interesting, and the future Lady Bradicot an excellent addition to the cast. Matt Addis brings all to life with great skill, his portrayal of every character makes them stand out clearly and his voice slows like silk.

Another great installment

I found the relationship between Hugh and Christina so irritating as the lady swoons away her independent spirit, was surprised to see that Catchpole and Hugh are now best buddies with Catchpole becoming a rather minor character who seems now to know his place, and that the baddies are so self destructive; overall I was disappointed in the depiction of character and relationships compared with the first two books in the series whilst appreciating the historical research informing the plot and circumstance depicted. I listened to the end in hope but am sad to find that I am giving up on this series.

Disappointed by book three
