Summary

The Heresy came to Calth without warning. In just a few hours of betrayal and bloodshed, the proud warriors of the XIIIth Legion - Guilliman's own Ultramarines - were laid low by the treachery of their erstwhile brothers of the XVIIth.

Now, as the planet is scoured by solar flares from the wounded Veridian star, the survivors must take the fight to the remaining Word Bearers and their foul allies or face damnation in the gloomy arcology shelters beneath the planet's surface.

In the novella-length Calth That Was, Graham McNeill highlights the fateful encounter that will alter the destiny of Captain Ventanus and shape the face of the Ultramarines Chapter for 10,000 years to come. The battle for Calth is far from over.

Great but not the greatest

I genuinely love all of the Horus Heresy books but this one, although interesting, didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I saw some other reviews that said this collection was worth skipping but I don’t think that’s true. It fills in some of the gaps for the aftermath of Calth and it expanded on the story one of my favourite perpetuals.

Gary Stu and his Ultrasmurfs

“Field Artillery guns are no use against Power Armour.” Word Bearers walking into traps blindly. They act like scared children. No evidence of the True Believers Legion Rule here, then. “The Word Bearers can’t fire back because they have low ammunition.”
THEY HAVE CHAINSWORDS! THEY WOULD USE THEM! I expected Chess Master-level Zone Mortalis tactics from both sides, but it was not to be found. There is no tension because there is no threat. At least for the most part. The last two separate short stories are very good.

Worst book of the series

I am really enjoying the Heresy series, and I don't like to skip books or episodes of something, even of the reviews say I should. In this case though, I should have. The most boring and pointless anthology, no real changes to the story, no interesting developments, nothing at all.

Do yourself a favor, skip this one, and carry on with this amazing series.

I am even returning this, and I have never done it before.

Skip to the last two stories

The last two stories are pretty good but the rest of the anthology are forgettable.

Hit and miss

Some alright ones, the short story about the perpetual pushes the story forward a bit but others are forgettable.

Boring

Particularly uninteresting despite the subject matter - not reflective of the series or shorter anthology stories

HH shorts at their best

A strong and diverse selection of stories, told from a range of different perspectives. Exploring the aftermath of the events on Calth, the survivors on both sides and their desperate plight to survive underground.

Very confusing

Not that the stories are badly wtitten, quite the opposite actually. However, choppikg them up like this feels like a wasted oportunity sadly.

This collection was a bit confusing, but worth a listen nontheless.

Excellent Stories

i was put off by the other reviews but took the risk and was not disappointed. these stories fill in some gaps in between know no fear and other books in the series and the last 2 stories involving the athem and Ol Pierson give more human color and depth to the multi millennium conflict that is going "just as planned"

Meh

This was the most unneccesary addition to the heresy since battle for the abyss or whatever the entire novel dedicated to explaining lorgars special ship was. I'm glad I'm done and can move on. I honestly don't remember a single moment worth sharing. pure filler.

A niche read

This title focuses almost exclusively on the aftermath of the betrayal at Calth, and the Ultramarines and Word Bearers left on the planet. While this book provides interesting detail in this specific theatre, it could easily be skipped by any who have only a passing interest in these legions.
This title also continues the roles the perpetuals play through the Heresy, though the importance of the specifics described in this title may prove to be insignificant.
Overall decently written and performed, but simply not of particular interest to this reviewer.

Slow Start but Great Ending

It was slow to start, with the first half of the book being pretty average, but the second half was filled with some riveting stories, and the final story in particular was fantastic.

Good collection

Always great stories and narration is excellent as usual. Not much as far as movement to the overall, larger story.

awesome

really good book I really like the battle for Calth. Anyone who likes the ultramarines will like this book. As for narrations I think J.K. hits it out of the park with his narrations he's the best.

Weaker of the series

There was one or two good stories but overall that could not save the book all together. Just a weak book.
