Summary

Le cynisme de la boutade aura beaucoup fait pour la fâcheuse réputation de Marie-Antoinette. Des Parisiens affamés, elle aurait dit : "Ils n'ont pas de pain ? Qu'ils mangent de la brioche !" Mot très certainement apocryphe, mais révélateur du portrait de femme futile et débauchée qui fut fait de l'"Autrichienne" après la Révolution.

Zweig, s'appuyant sur les archives de l'Empire autrichien, retrace avec pénétration l'évolution de cette trop jeune reine de 15 ans, que la faiblesse de Louis XVI va précipiter dans un tourbillon de fêtes avant de la vouer à la guillotine.
La lecture de Laurent Jacquet, mêlant sensibilité et rigueur, rend pleinement justice aux exceptionnelles qualités de biographe de Stefan Zweig.
