About this listen
Explore the captivating life of Mao Zedong.
Mao Zedong is recognized alongside Chiang Kai-Shek and Sun Yat-Sen as one of the most influential figures of modern Chinese history. His political control of the nation waned during his later years, but he remained the Chairman of the Community Party of China since it was established in 1949 to the day he died on September 9, 1976. As the founding father of the People’s Republic of China and the centerpiece of one of the world’s most intense personality cults, the extent of his influence is difficult to understate.
Today, Mao’s legacy can inspire slavish devotion, outright condemnation, as well as, a hesitance to look too closely at the negative aspects of his legacy. The fact that his influence spanned over nearly three decades also makes it difficult to arrive at a holistic understanding of his impact on China. The official line from the Community Party of China, which was popularized by Deng Xiaoping, is that Mao was “70 percent correct and 30 percent wrong”.
This biography details Mao’s remarkable journey from being the son of a peasant to one of modern history’s greatest - and highly polarizing - leaders. It aims to provide a better understanding of Mao as a person and to try to unpack the personality traits and personal experiences that shaped his worldview and actions.

Informative Work
It is an informative work if you are interested in Chinese culture or the person of Mao. But, it turns out the Chairman was just a pathetic excuse for a human.

I Actually Enjoyed It
I started listening to this book with only moderate interest. It quickly grabbed me and consumed pretty much all free time I had until it was completed. It is well written and does an incredible job of bringing you into the world of Chairman Mao and the on-goings in China during the Mao years.

Something Good
This book was bought because I desperately needed the references for a paper I'm writing in Chinese History. Thankfully, this book has supplied a great deal of reference material about the Chairman. Thank you.

Biography
A cross between a biography and an auto biography and endlessly fascinating. I have read quite a few books on China, many good and a few not so good, but is one of the best.

Perfect Vantage
The author had a perfect vantage point from which to watch the early days of Communism in China, moving from the idealism of the early days to the paranoia and cynicism of Mao's later days.

So Far So Good
I once respected Mao for his socialist visions. Now I know the truth: He was just a blundering buffoon who was not qualified to run a Car-wash, let alone a country.

Highly Recommended
Highly recommend this book. It is good for those who want an in-depth view on the inner circle of Mao's world and the intrigues, pressures and horrors even these people at high levels of the elite had to endure.

The Facts I didn't Know Before
Simple, elegant prose, matter of fact narrative turns into a tragedy of soul aloneness and paranoia. We didn't know this MAO.
