About this listen

Audie Award Finalist, Mystery, 2016

From the New York Times best-selling author of Queen of Hearts comes another mystery for "fans of P. G. Wodehouse looking for laughs mingled with some amateur sleuthing." (Publishers Weekly).

Lady Georgiana Rannoch won't deny that being 35th in line for the British throne has its advantages. Unfortunately money isn't one of them. And sometimes, making ends meet requires her to investigate a little royal wrongdoing.

While my beau, Darcy, is off on a mysterious mission, I am once again caught between my high birth and empty purse. I am therefore relieved to receive a new assignment from the queen - especially one that includes lodging. The king's youngest son, George, is to wed Princess Marina of Greece, and I shall be her companion at the supposedly haunted Kensington Palace. My duties are simple: help Marina acclimate to English life, show her the best of London, and, above all, dispel any rumors about George's libertine history. Perhaps that last bit isn't so simple. George is known for his many affairs with women as well as men - including the great songwriter Noel Coward. But things truly get complicated when I search the palace for a supposed ghost only to encounter an actual dead person: a society beauty said to have been one of Prince George's mistresses. Nothing spoils a royal wedding more than murder, and the queen wants the whole matter hushed. But as the investigation unfolds - and Darcy, as always, turns up in the most unlikely of places - the investigation brings us precariously close to the prince himself.

Critic reviews

"Both historical and fictional characters are brought to life through Kellgren's effusive reading of sparkling dialogue and humorous scenes. The escapades within the halls of Kensington Palace, and other royal residences and gambling establishments, as described by the lively Georgie are splendidly enhanced in this audio." ( AudioFile)

lovely nostalgic story

I loved this story. I am poorly at the moment and finding my usual books difficult to concentrate on (usually read non-fiction). My mother was a servant in a big house when these stories are set and I can easily imagine these characters keeping me company as I hobble around the village on my daily walk. I definately want to read the whole series. Well done Rhys 😄

Entertaining but

Story is entertaining but the constant shrieking when cockneys are involved becomes wearying and disagreeable.

Significant omission ...

Another enjoyable instalment, apart from the discrepancies around part of the story set on Sunday November 11.

This is Armistice Day and also Remembrance Sunday in the year in question, and yet there's no mention of it. Georgie's uncle died in the War, and the Major would have been involved in the ceremony at the Cenotaph - both of them would have had reflections on the Day and its implications, yet there is no mention. It's rather a glaring error.

Malice at the Palace

Lady Georgina is asked to help Prince George's intended to settle into London life before their wedding. After returning from a meal at the Palace she discovers the body of a young woman laying dead under the arch way. This is a fantastic murder mystery full of fun, read brilliantly again by Katherine Kellgren.

Interesting book, really enjoyed the characters

What made the experience of listening to Malice at the Palace the most enjoyable?

The narrator as usual was brilliant, able to use her voice to make different characters sound unique.

What did you like best about this story?

Interesting plot and story, lots of emotion which was written in a way that you could relate to. I always enjoy the detail that Rhys goes into when describing the different palaces and houses that Georgie goes to, you can really feel you are there.

Which character – as performed by Katherine Kellgren – was your favourite?

I always enjoy the characters of Georgiana and Darcy, Fig is very amusing, but Princess Marina was an interesting new character in this particular book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Georgie was being told about the dressing gown - I won't say any more for those who have not yet listened to the book.

Any additional comments?

Will there be more books in this series?... I hope so!

Pretty good but .

Another light easy and enjoyable episode. But some of the humour is perhaps getting a bit predictable and tired? Perhaps time to retire Queenie from the cast list. Also as others have noted, difficult to believe that Sun 11 Nov could have passed with no mention ir marking of the Armistice memorial by any character.
