About this listen

Paris comes under siege when someone starts killing women on the streets one summer - and Maigret must hatch a plan to lure the murderer out.

It was 4 August. The windows were wide open but brought no relief, since they allowed in even more warm air, which seemed to be rising from the melting tarmac, the burning hot stonework and even the Seine itself: one could imagine the river steaming like a pan of water on a stove.

Magnificent Maigret.

The usual brilliance of Gareth Armstrong's voice performance is only bested by the absolute perfection of Simenon's wonderful story telling, and the wonder of the creation that is Inspector Maigret. Maigret remains one of the indispensable creations of literature, with the quintessential Frenchness that makes him quirkily normal, novel, beloved and admirable. Maigret Sets a Trap is a story which looks deeply at the psychology of the murderer in a manner which makes you feel almost sorry for the perpetrator while showing the true revulsion of the horrendous act of evil: all told with literary brilliance by a true master of the crime novel.

probably...

probably one of the best known Maigret stories, it's been made into a film / TV program several times, and you can see why, it was Maigret doubting himself and risking it all, and as Simenon's writing goes, it's a solid B+ but there are plenty of A grades.
