Summary

The pioneer of romantic suspense, Mary Stewart, leads listeners on a thrilling journey through a dangerous and deadly Provence in this tale perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Barbara Pym.

It sounds idyllic: a leisurely drive through the sun-drenched landscape of Provence. But Charity's dream holiday turns into a nightmare when she becomes embroiled in a sinister plot to kidnap a young boy. She soon finds herself in a deadly pursuit and must uncover whom to trust...and whom to fall for.

Whenever I look back now on the strange and terrifying events of that holiday in Southern France, I remember the minutes I spent gazing at the golden arches of the Roman aqueduct over the Gardon...the last brief lull before the thunder.

A good listen

Really enjoyed revisiting this Mary Stewart novel. It was excellently read and is perfect to listen to whilst sewing. Some of the terms and vocabulary used are very much of its time.

Enjoyable!

Old fashioned mystery and suspense with romance thrown in too. Good plot and very easy to listen to.

Madam will you talk, l will listen!

A familiar book given new life by Emilia Fox's delightful reading of Mary Stewart's elegant descriptive prose.
As usual the heroine misjudged the hero, but the twists in the story are well woven and clearly and satisfactorily concluded.
A compelling read/listen.

Great book and great narration

This is the first time I have heard Emilia Fox narrate a book and she was excellent, so much so that I went on to purchase Pride and Predjudice also narrated by her, though I had read, listened to and seen P&P so many times. I don't know how she manages it, but I forgot it was just Emilia in both books, she managed so many different voices for all the characters.

What can you say about the story line, brilliant as usual and perhaps a little more to it than the romance element!
