Summary

Zola at his most poignant.

I’ve read L’Œuvre before some years back, but was prompted to revisit it after watching the excellent film « Cézanne et moi ». It is thoroughly despicable to use and distort the life of a childhood friend, as Zola has in this novel, but it is a very moving and engrossing book. (The Rougon-Macquart series has some masterpieces and some awful drivel!)
I wish more were available as audiobooks all the same - « Pot-Bouille » and « L.Assommoir » particularly.
As I get older, I don’t have time to re-read, but an Audiobook can be enjoyed while doing other things.
The narrator does well, as he has before.
