Summary

The Jacobs family has lived at Orley Court for generations. But when Vanessa Jacobs is widowed and left to manage the property, she finds costs spiralling out of control. In order to stay in their beloved home, she and her daughters will have to sell part of it off - a decision that drives a wedge between Vanessa and her mother-in-law.

The new owners of the north wing are Laurence Sturridge and his father, Marcus. Both of them long for an escape: Laurence from the monotony of his City career; Marcus from the grief of losing his wife. Could the beauty of Orley Court offer them a fresh outlook on life?

As the two families embark on a challenging new chapter over the course of a glorious English summer, secrets are revealed and relationships tested. But as Orley Court begins to weave its magic over them, will it be love, above all, that brings the two families together?

Narration ruined a good story

Any additional comments?

The story was lovely but totally ruined by the narration. I was going to give up on it at the beginning but I did persevere and enjoyed the story itself. I've learnt that I was always listen to a sample before purchasing from now on.

Spoiled by robotic reading.

I really do not like giving poor reviews, but my enjoyment of this book was totally spoiled by the way it was read, had to give up listening, just could not stand it, so very irritating, in future I will listen to the samples before buying, the book itself was a reasonably good story.

Terrible

The narrator has not got the kind of voice for reading a story at all. She would be better reading the shipping forcast. Sorry to be so blunt.
Very dissapointing!!!

Poor reading

Sorry, but I couldn't listen to this - the book may be fine, but the reading is awful.

Might be a good story but ruined by narration

I quite enjoyed the beginning of the story but the dreadful narration completely ruined it for me. I was starting to wonder if she was even English and was reading in her second language due to the bizarre inflections and emphasis placed on the wrong words in a sentence. In the end I couldn't listen to it any more and stopped listening.

A reasonable story line

Would you try another book written by Victoria Connelly or narrated by Susan Duerden?

Yes to Victoria Connelly but no to read by Susan Duerdon who has a very irritating voice which is monotonous and gives no variation

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Duerden’s performances?

No - I do not like the way her voice goes up and down at the end of every sentence.

Do you think Love in an English Garden needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

It would be nice to know how the characters develop.

Terrible robotic narration

So so rather slow story, it was completely ruined by terrible robotic narrator.
I ended up skipping a lot of the story, as couldn’t listen anymore.
The Rose Girls by the same author is much better.

Lovely Story

I always enjoy Victoria Connelly's books but I really didn't enjoy the narration. However it was a very sweet tale.
