Los jefes (1959) fue el primer libro publicado por Mario Vargas Llosa, con el cual obtuvo su primer reconocimiento literario, el Premio Leopoldo Alas. Según su autor, «Los jefes es un pequeño microcosmos de lo que vendría a ser el resto de mis libros».

Cuando escribió Los cachorros (1967), el escritor peruano era ya dueño de todas sus facultades narrativas, por lo que es un muestrario de la diversidad de las pasiones personales y colectivas. Tal y como afirma Vargas Llosa, «de todas las obras que he escrito es la que ha tenido interpretaciones más diversas».

A través de los adolescentes protagonistas de las dos obras, Vargas Llosa reflexiona sobre la tiranía y la violencia que marcan una sociedad y frustran las expectativas de sus habitantes.
