La región de los Toraja se encuentra enclavada en la zona montañosa de la isla indonesia de Célebes. Aún hoy es complicado llegar ya que sólo está comunicada por tierra y el trayecto desde el aeropuerto más cercano toma ocho horas por unas carreteras angostas y sinuosas. Sin embargo, vale la pena el viaje.
Lo que encontré fue una comunidad cristiana (la mayoría protestante) muy sencilla, cuyo medio básico de subsistencia es el cultivo del arroz, pero que mantiene una firme creencia en la importancia de los funerales como medio para llegar con dignidad al mundo de los espíritus, a "Puyá". Los rituales alrededor de los sepelios, el lugar que juegan los búfalos de agua y los sitios que se eligen como última morada siguen unas costumbres únicas en el mundo. Este es el relato de una visita a esta fascinante comunidad.
