Summary

A terrified young woman asks Miss Silver for help unmasking someone who has threatened her life.

Rachel Traherne does not want to meet Maud Silver. She does not want to tell her that someone has threatened her life, because she does not want that dreadful fact to be true. But see Miss Silver she must, for the stout, old-fashioned detective is the only person in London who may be able to keep her safe.

Rachel has been receiving threatening letters about her deceased father's fortune. The first two letters were vague; the third said simply, "Get ready to die." Since then she has been nearly killed three times: first by a flight of sabotaged stairs, second by fire, and third by a box of poisoned chocolates. She fears it may be a family member, jealous of her inheritance and willing to kill to get it. But who could it be? Miss Silver is going to find out.

Excellent !

Love Patricia Wentworth. Good old fashioned whodunit. No swearing. Great.
Great narrator. Puts good emphasis in voice. Loved it.

Very enjoyable

I thought this one of Patricia Wentworth’s more tightly constructed stories and that it was excellently narrated. I see other reviewers felt differently. I enjoy the gentle pace without a serial killer in sight!

Excellent plot, some 'wet' females!!

The plot was really good and fast-moving!
Some of the females were feeble and annoying!!

Irritating and long-winded - not one of Wentworth’s better efforts!

The narrator’s attempt at an American accent was awful and she shouldn’t have tried!
The weak whimpering of brainless female characters - so often a feature of Wentworth’s work - is almost unbearable here, as is the long-drawn out story.
I was shocked by the use of an offensive racist word - it should have been edited out and, if not, the narrator shouldn’t have spoken it - I am disappointed that she did so - it says more about her than it does about Wentworth, (who was writing in 1939!)

Disappointing and dull.

like an Agatha Christie

A very gentle mystery who was it? a classic oldfashioned tale of a damsel in distress. Nearly a murder mystery.

Weak narrator and rambling story

Sadly Miss Silver was disappointing in this yarn. The story has dated far worse than the first two books. The narrator's American accent was teeth-grindingly bad.
