Schiaccianoci prende vita e, divenuto generale dei soldatini e dei pupazzi di marzapane, affronta il perfido re. Marie e Fritz vengono così trasportati in un mondo abitato da topi, fate, soldati, principi e principesse, dove realtà e sogno si intrecciano insieme.

Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (1776 - 1822) è stato uno dei più rilevanti esponenti del romanticismo tedesco. Nonostante sia noto soprattutto per la sua produzione letteraria, è stato anche pittore, musicista e critico musicale. I suoi racconti, che spaziano dalla fiaba alla satira, dal fantastico all’horror, sono stati d’ispirazione a diversi autori come per esempio Dostoevskij, Puškin, Gogol' e Poe. Tra le sue opere letterarie più note si ricordano: Il vaso d'oro (1814), Schiaccianoci e il re dei topi (1816), Racconti Notturni (1816), Il cuore di pietra (1817) e L'ospite sinistro (1819).
