Summary

As Britain stands alone against a monstrous enemy, the inhabitants of Pearl Street face hardship and heartbreak with courage and humour. The war touches each of them in a different way: for Annie Poulson, a widow, it means never-ending worry when her twin boys are called up and sent to France; Sheila Reilly's husband, Cal, faces the terror of U-Boat attacks; Eileen Costello is liberated from a bitter, loveless marriage when her husband is sent to Egypt and she goes to work in a munitions factory - and falls in love. And Jessica Fleming, down on her luck, is forced to return to the street she'd hoped never to see again.

An Old Scouse Street Comes Alive Again

One really gets to know the characters. It's like one is there, on Pearl Street, in Bootle before the Blitz.

Great story

Enjoyable listen from the narrator who brought the story to life. 1st book I’ve listened to by this author but if there’s more like this it won’t be the last.

Great story

I loved getting to know all the characters. It was a great insight into living through WW2 in Liverpool. Intertwining love stories and tragedies had you smiling one minute and then near to tears the next. I was disappointed with the ending until i discovered the book was part of a trilogy so it was a just a cliffhanger and couldn’t wait to read book 2 to continue the story. Annoyed now though as book 2 and 3 are not on Audible!!! Why would audible do this??? It’s so frustrating.

Love listening this but the accent is a bit off

I love these stories on while I’m at work. Only thing that bothered me as someone who lives just outside Liverpool I find the Scouse accent very off. But apart from that it’s brilliant!

Brilliant story as ever from maureen Lee

I have really enjoyed the first book in the series pearl street, but was seriously annoyed that only book 1 and 5 are on audio books. That's so unfair to people like me who can no longer read without eye strain. I was really excited to read the next part, especially after the ending of the first book. Please rectify this and put no.s 2,3 and 4 onto audio also. Its a joke putting on the first and the last only. Narration was okay, but her Welsh accent was awful.

Lights out in Liverpool

As usual a lovely story from Maureen Lee, but what an abrupt ending, I just hope there is a sequence

Excellent story

Loved the story but as others mentioned the accents were not the best - but still enjoyed it nonetheless
