Summary

Detective Dave Robicheaux, his wife Molly and daughter Alafair are vacationing in Montana. But evil, it seems, has followed them into this wild paradise.

Someone is stalking Alafair, and Dave begins to suspect that it's a convicted serial killer she interviewed two years ago - even though he’s supposed to be dead.

Is Alafair the target of a depraved serial killer, or has she unwittingly crossed paths with a murderous psychopath closer to home?

Good creation of atmosphere.

The descriptions of the characters,,actions and environment plus dark humour made the story very enjoyable.
The reader highlights the difference between American and UK English.

Didn't like the storyline

I struggled to finish it. It seems to drag on for a long time. Enjoyed Clete' character in this book and Dave seem to have taken a backseat.

Masterful story and narration

Once again an absolute sublime story and narration. James Lee Burke is a genius. I want to go to New Iberia and Montana. Flights are cheap at the moment. Could you please acquire the rights for the rest of jlbs books please.
Overall just delicious

Excellent!

What does Will Patton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Will Paton's accents are brilliant. He brings each character to life and while at first the local dialects can sometimes be a bit tricky to understand for us Brits, you soon get used to it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This was one of those books that I could not wait to get back in the car and carry on listening to. If there was one criticism, it would be that it was a little too long and some scenes did not add much to the plot.

Any additional comments?

This was my first James Lee Burke novel and he is so descriptive, you feel like you are stood next to the characters in Montana as it is happening. He also has a very dry sense of humor with some excellent "one liners". I now intend to buy the full " Dave Robicheaux" series.

Brilliant as always

James Lee Burke is just quite simply a brilliant author. His characters, his plot, his prose is just perfect. This is a great yarn, with the usual suspects and a few gruesome baddies.
Will Patton is without doubt the consummate narrator. He is just perfect. Thank you for an great great listen:):):)

I suffered this for 14 chapters

The drawl of the narrator had my mind wandering off the story constantly. when I concentrated really hard, the amount of description made me lose the thread of the story. After 14 chapters I believed I'd given it enough of a chance and realised I hadn't really acquired any grasp on this story, but that it was utterly boring.

Definitely not James Lee Burke's best work

JLB is one of my favourite contemporary author's. I've read most of his novels and have either enjoyed them, really enjoyed them and occasionally, really, really enjoyed them. Not so with this one.

It takes place, for no obvious reason, in Montana. It introduces a new character with an entirely unplausable back story and cuts corners in both the plot an narrative in every second chapter.

Read any of JLB's other novels before this. if you don't, you'll not recognise just how good he can be.

TORTURE!

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

No one in their right mind

What could James Lee Burke have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Never started writing

Would you be willing to try another one of Will Patton’s performances?

NEVER

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

none

Any additional comments?

Please, please do not put yourself through this appalling book. I got this 'free' with another book and I still feel like I'm owed money....
