Summary

As a child, Elizabeth was sent from her war-torn, rather loveless home in London to stay with a big, boisterous family in a small town in Ireland. There she meets Aisling, and begins what becomes a long-lasting friendship.

Over the next 20 years, Aisling and Elizabeth's paths will cross and re-cross. As they face their loves, their marriages, and their disappointments, they realise that not all problems will be solved, nor all wishes granted by lighting a penny candle.

Enjoyable slow burner!

I hadn't heard of this author before but am glad that I gave it a go. The story isn't a seat-of-your-pants sort of tale, it's just an enjoyable tale that is set in England and Ireland and let's you get to know the places and characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it actually despite tending to go for crime/thrillers set at a swift pace. I really wanted to see how it al turned out, I felt like I'd got to know all the characters personally. A good bit of writing and a fantastic narrator with a gorgeous voice that was perfect for the times. Very impressed and would recommend.

Wonderful

First Maeve Binchy - heart warming, wrenching. Made me laugh and cry. Plot twists that were unexpected. The two main characters were especially believable, and it is possible to find elements of ones own friendships within the story that resonate.

light a penny candle

This is a well written book which was brilliantly brought to life by the narrator. The intertwined lives of the characters superbly developed and it kept me gripped to the end. Being narrated meant a companion on dog walks, whatever the weather.

Looking forward to listening to more from the same author.

Great story telling

Kate Binchy's narration is marvellous. I was fully engrossed in the story and marvelled at how many voices she could do. Maeve Binchy is a wonderful story teller and I love her portrayal of characters. This story of 2 childhood friends half set in Ireland and the other half in London doesn't disappoint but I gave it 4 stars as I was disappointed by the ending. I wanted to know more about the last event and what the next step would be for the 2 friends. I woould, however ,recommend this book highly.

It leaves you wanting more!

I love Maeve Binchy books and this one leaves me wanting to know what happened next to Elizabeth and Aisling, that’s the sign of a good story. Excellently read by Kate Binchy as usual. Would highly recommend to any listener.

The Characters.

I loved this book, couldn't stop listening to it. The ending was sad, but a lovely story of friendship, families, love and life.

Great storytelling and well narrated

Great storytelling and well narrated. Enjoyed this book so much but what a hugely disappointing ending. It seemed rushed, as if there wasn’t time to properly finish the story. I even checked that there wasn’t a final chapter missing.I was hoping for a sequel but sadly nothing more was written.
