Summary

Winner of the CWA Goldsboro Gold Dagger award 2015

Why would a man escape from prison the day before he's due to be released?

Audie Palmer has spent a decade in prison for an armed robbery in which four people died, including two of the gang. Seven million dollars has never been recovered and everybody believes that Audie knows where the money is. For 10 years he has been beaten, stabbed, throttled, and threatened almost daily by prison guards, inmates, and criminal gangs, who all want to answer this same question, but suddenly Audie vanishes, the day before he's due to be released. Everybody wants to find Audie, but he's not running. Instead he's trying to save a life...and not just his own.

A book without Joe O'loughlin...Oh Joy!

If you could sum up Life or Death in three words, what would they be?

No Joe O'Loughlin

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really enjoyed them all. Each character had a apart to play and were easily created in my mind with Robotham's excellent dialogue and a really good narration. Forget what people might say, the choice of an American was perfect for this book. Yes I love Sean Barrett, but not for this gig.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Can't say without creating a spoiler

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

As above, this is a silly question really

Any additional comments?

I would reccomend this book I thoroughly enjoyed it but it's not a joe o'loughlin novel and yes I liked those too. But Joe was beginning to get on my nerves a tad and how many times can your wife and kids be kidnapped, tortured or put into protective custody. Nice one Michael, more like this please.

Compelling, mysterious and thought-provoking.

Having listened to all of the Joe O'Loughlin series, I was unsure how I felt about a Michael Robotham novel set in a different country and without Sean Barrett. My skepticism was unfounded, though, as this was well-written and well-narrated piece, and possibly my favourite of Robotham's novels to date.

The plot unfolds at a measured pace, leaving the listener to speculate about past events and the intentions of characters in the present. The author is also very adept at writing "grey" characters - neither good nor bad, just humans, flawed and victims of circumstance. The protagonist is very likeable, and the listener's empathy for him develops well as more of the backstory is revealed and his present predicament is exacerbated, right through to a gripping climax.

Well worth a listen!

I really enjoyed this book, however would agree with other reviews it was a tad slow to start. Don't give up though as it soon gets going & then you won't be able to stop listening!

Great story line which was well read ensuring all characters were easily identified.

Well worth a listen!

Entertaining if predictable!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it was entertaining.

Have you listened to any of John Chancer’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes. John Chancer is excellent. I chose this book because John Chancer was narrating it. When John Chancer reads a book it is like watching a film.

All threads being weaved together in the end

The plot is very well thought out, and the reader is kept ignorant in the right way (at least for me) up until the very end.

Chancer is an excellent narrator, and in essence, I am extremely happy with this title.

Not your usual Robotham book, but loved it

Any additional comments?

Wow, this was one brillant audiobook .
I have listened to most of the Joseph O'Loughlin series and have loved them all. but this is something completely different.
Unlike most of Robothams other books it's set in USA.
The mood is not as " dark " as the Joseph O'Loughlin books. So if you haven't liked them , then give this one a chance
Right from the start you realise that things are not as they seem in this story and I loved how they gradually got unravelled and explained. Good plot , and charactors that you care about and root for. Exciting ending.
Well done Michael you have proven that you are up there with the best.
Good narration by John Chancer, I thought his voice was well suited to the story.

A Surprisingly Good Read

When I started this book, I thought this isn’t my sort of story. How wrong could I be, the story built and twisted and drew me in and then I was listening at every opportunity. The characters were believable and I felt connected to their story. I highly recommend this book.
