About this listen

Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers join forces to track down a ruthless killer who will do whatever it takes to keep the past buried, in this latest thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford.

Doris Grandfelt, an employee at an accounting firm, was brutally stabbed to death . . . but nobody knew exactly where the crime took place. Her body was found the next night, dumped among a dense thicket of trees along the edge of an urban park, eight miles east of St. Paul, Minnesota. Despite her twin sister Lara Grandfelt’s persistent calls to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the killer was never found.

Twenty years later, Lara has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Confronted with the possibility of her own death, she’s determined to find Doris’s killer once and for all. Finally taking matters into her own hands, she dumps the entire investigative file on every true-crime site in the world and offers a $5 million reward for information leading to the killer’s arrest. Dozens of true-crime bloggers show up looking for both new evidence and ‘clicks,’ and Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers are called in to review anything that might be a new lead.

When one of the bloggers locates the murder weapon, Lucas and Virgil begin to uncover vital details about the killer’s identity. But what they don’t know is the killer lurks in plain sight, and with the true-crime bloggers blasting every clue online, the killer can keep one step ahead. As the nation manoeuvres the detectives closer to the truth, Lucas and Virgil will find that digging up Doris’s harrowing past might just get them buried instead.

The failure to provide a decent ending and too much focus on the true crime people.

Really got into the story, was thoroughly enjoying it, until the abrupt ending. How did it finish? Why wasn’t the story fully completed, unfortunately spoilt the book for me.

Where’s the ending?

I was really enjoying the book but was really disappointed by the abrupt ending which spoiled the whole experience for me

Great story as usual

It’s always good to spend time in the company of Flowers and Davenport and this is no exception. The story’s good, albeit the involvement of true-crime podcasters feels a bit bandwagon-jumpy. The progress of the story is ok, but it’s inconsistent and there are fairly chunky sized holes in the plot. The biggest issue, as others have said, is the ending which appears out of the blue as if someone lost the last chapter of the manuscript. There doesn’t seem to be enough left for a part 2 and nothing at the end of this book sets up a follow-up. It’s all just a little odd.

Abrupt ending spoils decent Flowers/Davenport book

I love, love, love this series. This one, (number 35), is nice in that it brings in Jenkins and Shrake, characters from earlier books...the way John Sandford writes them always gives me a good laugh.
Interesting and absorbing as ever, the plot lines are just brilliant and the main characters seem as familiar to me as family members. (the ones I like).
I confess I still really miss Richard Ferrone narrating. Considering I've listened to him for hours and hours, his voice will always be Lucas and he would always get just the right amount of disdain, annoyance and humour that gave the characters depth. That said, Robert Petkoff isn't terrible by a long chalk and he's done a decent job of the last few books.

Thank you John Sandford, for all your hard, brilliant work,

This author ALWAYS writes a great story.

I have always loved the amount of detail that John Sandford puts into his novels, there's always a thrilling investigation at the heart of the book, but it's the amount of tiny little details and seemingly inconsequentials, such as what kind of ice cream cones Lucas & Virgil choose, that always make you feel as though you're right there next to them as they investigate.
I don't want to give any spoilers, so I won't comment on the storyline, except to say that I loved it! I love thrillers like this one, where you know from the start who the killer is, and some of the book is written from their POV. It's exciting to see the investigation unfold and watch the investigators discover the identity that you, the reader, already know.
Brilliant writing and excellent narration made this an amazing listen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another excellent outing for Lucas & Virgil ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lucas and Virgil are like old men,the story is tedious. I've read all the Prey books and this wasn't worth the read. Why do yhe characters have to age so badly and boringly!! James Bond was the same character for 50 years.I have no interest in all their money and wives and kids. They use to be clever sharp men, always willing to step around the law to get the bad guys, now it's all politics. This will be the last Prey book I buy,

Boring!

I’ve read/listened to all the Davenport/Flowers books, they’re all good and I don’t mind a cliffhanger for the next book but this is a bit much. The story isn’t finished and this is essentially part 1 of 2, and that’s only if they finish it off in the next book. This is the sort of trick that James Patterson started to pull and one of the reasons I stopped buying his books, and the fact that he has a co-writer on everything now. It’s a bit much to now have to wait a year for the next book to conclude this story, very disappointed in this regard but the rest of the book is good.

Beware, this is part 1 of 2!

Read/Listened to all of the ‘Prey’ books always good value for money and interesting reads.
The authors note at the beginning of this book gives away the whole premise: that being that at the end someone’s going to end up in court. Which is tbf a nice hook. There’s some interesting ‘true crime’ persons/activity/active help along the way.
Another nice ensemble of Lucas and Virgil investigating together.
BUT…
Presumably there was a deadline and Sandford feels so confident that he can now churn out any old tosh, he leaves us with no climax, no resolution, no ending.
It’s lazy, annoying and an insult to the reader.
I’m going to ask for my money back - won’t get anywhere or even a reply I suppose, but honestly just don’t bother until (presumably) we find out where this whole book goes in yet another book (money grab).
Very Very Poor.

No Ending, Asking for a Refund.

I wonder if the last few chapters have accidentally been chopped off the end of the recording? Otherwise it makes no sense at all. It's curious that there is no mention of any planned Part 2 in the End Credits, and in my experience Sandford has always played very fairly with his readers and delivered in full measure (with the possible exception of Storm Front...).
Until this issue is clarified by Audible, I would say best avoided.

Is there a fault in the recording?
