A tutti tocca vivere l'ultima estate. È quella in cui si perde l'innocenza, si sciolgono le compagnie spensierate, s'allungano ombre inattese e ferali. Per Vittorio e i suoi amici accade alle porte dell'adolescenza, nei dintorni di Venezia, in un paese con un nome da favola nera: Brondolo. La ricorderanno per sempre come "l'estate del cane bambino", quella in cui il piccolo Narciso (fratello minore di Ercole, uno dei cinque del gruppo) scomparve.

Al suo posto, obbedendo ai canoni di una locale leggenda, apparve un piccolo cane cui misero nome Houdini, il mito del bambino sparito. Per illudersi, per non soffrire, vollero credere che davvero quell'animale fosse la reincarnazione dello scomparso. È una finzione a cui partecipa tutto il paese, immerso in un'atmosfera di umidità e omertà.

Recitano gli uomini, gli uni spettatori dei vizi degli altri; le donne, acquiescenti in un silenzio dettato dall'amore o per amore mascherato; il prete, supremo complice. Mai un angolo di Veneto è parso tanto oscuro, tanto a sud nella geografia delle consuetudini narrative. Il culmine dell'estate e della storia è in un doppio, struggente sacrificio. Dopodiché, ognuno torna alla vita.

Solo molti anni più tardi Vittorio farà il percorso inverso, ritroverà gli amici sopravvissuti al banco di un bar immutabile e su quel legno poserà un foglio come di calendario che apre infine una nuova stagione: lo spoglio inverno della verità.
