L'idée de provoquer l'amour par de fausses confidences a été souvent mise en œuvre avant et après Marivaux. Cette comédie à l'intrigue bien conduite, sagement développée, aux caractères aimables et en relief, aux situations comiques et intéressantes n'ayant pas obtenu, à ses débuts, tout le succès qu'elle méritait, elle reçut néanmoins un accueil plus favorable à sa reprise au Théâtre-Français en 1793.
