In una città senza nome (ma che ricorda molto da vicino una Bologna cupa e iperrealistica) il capo della polizia scientifica Paolo Mormino indaga su un omicidio in una clinica psichiatrica, il cui proprietario, un grosso costruttore immobiliare, vuole mettere a tacere lo scandalo.
Formino incontra la donna dell'ucciso, e intreccia con lei una torrida relazione. Quando, al Cimitero Monumentale, viene trovato un altro cadavere, e si scopre che entrambe le vittime erano informatori dei carabinieri, la polizia è costretta ad abbandonare l'inchiesta. Ma Mormino andrà avanti da solo, incurante dei rischi.
