Summary

Leadership is not something people are necessarily born with - it can be learned. The most effective way to learn leadership is through the techniques of Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP). NLP is a set of skills for psychologically influencing people (using body language, verbal techniques, and a host of other practical methods).

This book will help readers to:

  • Find their own leadership style
  • Think strategically
  • Empower others
  • Overcome resistance

A dull collection of self-help cliches

Ever wondered how Ricky Gervais came up with all those lines for David Brent in the Office? Buy this book and it'll all make sense. Don't get me wrong there's a few insightful points being well made here but nothing you haven't heard before. The whole NLP thing is tacked on in the last 10 minutes presumably for maketing purposes. All in all a book with no message and no otehr purpose than to line the author/publishers pocket.

If your into this kinda stuff save yourself a few bucks and google Baz Luhrmann.

Good, tho' it's not Ian reading it!

Joseph O'Connor is a long-time collaborator of Ian McDermott; I've read and enjoyed their books. It would have been nice to know that Ian doesn't appear anywhere in this recording, and that the first thing you hear is that 'Leading with NLP' is 'written and read by Joseph O'Connor'. But maybe I'm just picky.

There's a lot that is useful in this audiobook and I think it bears repeated listening, over time. It has useful exercises and questions to prompt reflection and self-awareness. I found it very valuable to get me to reflect on how I operate, the skills I have and so on. It's like being coached by Joseph, which I really enjoyed.

I'm very familiar with NLP and the concepts covered, but a complete beginner to NLP would get a great deal from this audiobook (and I think, so would an NLP-sceptic!). Joseph refers to several key NLP concepts, but also draws inother relevant frameworks from the Leadership literature.

Probably best listened to with pen and paper so you can actually write down the insights you get rather than just heard through headphones whilst on the way to other things.
