Why are some people and organisations more inventive, pioneering and successful than others? And why are they able to repeat their success again and again? This book is for anyone who wants to inspire others or to be inspired.

Captain David Marquet was used to giving orders. In the high-stress environment of the USS Santa Fe, a nuclear-powered submarine, it was crucial his men did their job well. But the ship was dogged by poor morale, poor performance and the worst retention in the fleet. Marquet took matters into his own hands and pushed for leadership at every level. Before long, his crew became fully engaged and the Santa Fe skyrocketed from worst to first in the fleet. No matter your business or position, you can apply Marquet's approach to create a workplace where everyone is a leader.

Story
Leadership is not about titles, status and power over people. Leaders are people who hold themselves accountable for recognising the potential in people and ideas and developing that potential. This is an audiobook for everyone who is ready to choose courage over comfort, make a difference and lead. When we dare to lead, we don't pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don't see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it and work to align authority and accountability.

Every leader must be ready and willing to take charge, to make hard, crucial calls for the good of the team and the mission. Something much more difficult to understand is that in order to be a good leader, one must also be a good follower. This is a dichotomy - a Dichotomy of Leadership. It is, as authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin explained in their best-selling first audiobook, Extreme Ownership, “Simple, Not Easy”.

Story
After a five-year research project, Jim Collins concludes that good to great can and does happen. In this audiobook, he uncovers the underlying variables that enable any type of organisation to make the leap from good to great while other organisations remain only good. Rigorously supported by evidence, his findings are surprising - at times even shocking - to the modern mind. Good to Great achieves a rare distinction: a management book full of vital ideas that reads as well as a fast-paced novel.

Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Narrated by Simon Sinek.
Imagine a world where almost everyone wakes up inspired to go to work, feels trusted and valued during the day, then returns home feeling fulfilled.
This is not a crazy, idealised notion.
Today, in many successful organisations, great leaders are creating environments in which people naturally work together to do remarkable things.
In Leaders Eat Last, Simon Sinek, internationally best-selling author of Start With Why, investigates these great leaders from Marine Corps Officers, who don't just sacrifice their place at the table but often their own comfort and even their lives for those in their care, to the heads of big business and government - each putting aside their own interests to protect their teams.
Sinek argues that this is what it means to be a leader and asks are you a leader?

Some new ideas
Promoted the idea of service and looking after employees in a new spirit of we not me. All good but everything came back to dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin, this reached ridiculous proportions by the end of the book and detracted from the overall message.

Incredibly dull and monotonous
The book starts out well, giving useful insights into effective leadership. As the book goes on however, it becomes unbearable. The author tells boring story after boring story about American companies and people. These stories go on way too long and are simply not needed in order to convey the simplistic leadership principles intended. In true American fashion, the author fails to discuss any other country in his case studies, as if America is the only nation on Earth. As a Brit, this was infuriating to listen to. Furthermore, the author's references to Dopamine, Seratonin and other chemicals reaches epic monotony, bordering the ridiculous.
Overall, a huge amount of history, chemistry and American egotism that completely murders the potential of this being a good book.

Ok, but strangely laking in guidance
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Honestly the word oxytocin was in every other sentence, it really started to grate on my nerves. And for a book I had expected to be full of suggestions what to change it was strangely laking on that front. 95% summarising what is wrong in todays businesses 5% not very clear suggestions what to do.
Would you be willing to try another book from Simon Sinek? Why or why not?
Probably not, he had plenty of time to get a message to me this time round.
Have you listened to any of Simon Sinek’s other performances? How does this one compare?
No.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
Nobody would go to a film based on a self help book.
Any additional comments?
Very US focused view of the world. And oh yes, the military is just great and a perfect place to be. The author does not even seem to have heard of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder yet. He honestly claimed that soldiers send into battle are faring better that the one left behind.

Lacking in substance and cliche
This has it all: the classic patronising introduction to evolutionary biology and hormones, an overview of almost every popular scientific study that you already know about with tortured metaphors to link to the author’s message, the generalisation of entire groups of people, and more.
Sometimes I would dip into the book and wondered whether I’d stepped into some kind of one-man “stuff I heard on a train” podcast. The core issue with this book is the horrible way the author picks well-known phenomena and studies and twists them into supporting the theme with a kind of “isn’t it obvious” tone. It feels like there is very little evidence backing any of his actual assertions.
There is some practical advice at the end of the book about managing millennials. Turns out they want a purpose in life and like feedback. Cool.
