Les héros en sont Renart ou Goupil (le renard) et Ysengrin (le loup), en qui se personnifient la ruse et la force. Autour d'eux se meut tout un monde, qui est l'image du monde féodal avec sa hiérarchie, ses castes, ses préjugés, ses mœurs et ses lois : le roi Noble, le lion, et dame Orgueilleuse, se femme ; Brun, l'ours, et Beaucent, le sanglier, conseillers du roi ; l'archiprêtre Bernart, l'âne ; Braiant, le taureau ; le bon sire Belin, le mouton ; Tardieu, le limaçon, brillant et preux chevalier, etc.
