Die siebzehnjährige Lily wächst Mitte der 50er Jahre in der chinesischen Community von San Francisco auf. Als sie bei einem Schulprojekt Kathleen kennenlernt, wird ihr klar, dass sie anders ist – und anders fühlt – als die anderen Mädchen. Die beiden freunden sich an und besuchen nachts heimlich eine verbotene Lesbenbar, den Telegraph Club. Hier taucht Lily in eine Welt ein, die sie maßlos fasziniert. Und ihr wird klar, dass sie mehr für Kath empfindet.
Doch das Amerika des Jahres 1954 ist kein sicherer Ort für zwei Mädchen, die sich verlieben, schon gar nicht in Chinatown. Als ihre nächtlichen Besuche des Telegraph Club auffliegen, hat dies Folgen für Lilys Familie. Dennoch kann und will sie ihre Liebe zu Kath nicht aufgeben.
