Summary

A nostalgic tale of first love, first loss, and the budding womanhood of a Black girl in the '90s.

Tragedy flips Amore Brown’s world on its axis right before she heads off to college. Having to sit tight for the summer, she chooses Jersey City, New Jersey - the home of her estranged father - to pass the time. Here, in urban grit, a stark contrast to the comforts of suburbia, she reconnects with a long-lost cousin for some final months of summer excursions, enrooting, and evolving. But it could never be that simple, even if it were all so simple then....

How much will Amore have to lose in order to find herself? On the road to the woman she is becoming and removed from the girl she is no more, one stop changes her path forever.

"Girls just want to have fun" transforms into the kindling of summer romance tucked into the crust of good times, tribulations, close calls, and one hot summer in Jersey. Amore meets THE guy, finds solace, heals fresh wounds, and battles the thorny relationship with her father, all while learning that heartache has no limits.

Shayna Small delivered this story beautifully!

I read this story back when it was first released and absolutely loved it! The audio elevates the experience. I loved the 90's references and vibe. Takerra Allen does such a magnificent job ringing her readers into the mind and heart of her characters they become living beings to us. I've already listened twice because this story just wont let me go...although there is a particular scene and I can not suffer through again.
I highly recommend this story.

Phenomenal

I really don’t know where to start .. I purchased this because Someone in a group I’m in recommended AND AM I GLAD I DID!!! I COULD NOT STOP LISTENING AS WELL AS REWINDING EVERY SO OFTEN TO REPLAY WHAT I HEARD. This was such a great story it pulled me in and had me right there with them. I FOUND MYSELF LAUGHING, CRYING, YELLING! It took me on a emotional ride. The narrator OH MY GOODNESS! This was the first time I’ve heard her and she DID NOT COME TO PLAY… her voices are pure perfection… i usually lean toward dual narration BUT I WILL DEFINITELY LISTEN TO ANYTHING SHE DOES MOVING FORWARD!

A beautiful coming of age tale!

This is the book I didn’t know that I needed to read. It’s a beautiful yet poignant tale of first love set against the back grip of grief, self-preservation and all of the angst associated with coming of age in an urban area. There are gems interwoven throughout the story that are conveyed in a way that is relatable to readers, young or old.

So good, so refreshing……

I’m sure if I read this book as opposed to listening to Audible, it would be a page turner. The storyline is very interesting. It’s the first book that I’ve heard in which it’s hood love that is swoon worthy. The author wrote this beautiful, descriptive, thought provoking novel. A must read, and Ms. Small delivered as usual, you can’t go wrong with her narration.
