About this listen

I was sent to Isaiah Ranch for a second chance at life—not love.

For two years, I’ve ignored the presence of the beautiful man whose heart I broke. Despite working on the same ranch, searching for the same redemption, I’ve managed to avoid Reed.

Years ago, I walked away because Reed deserved better than a pathetic loser like me. He was destined for greater things, and I would only drag him down. I left him to save him, breaking both our hearts.

But my luck has run out. Circumstances force Reed and me together, and it turns out our flame was never extinguished. If anything, it burns hotter and brighter now we’re older.

It’s the second chance I never thought I’d get.

When history repeats itself, and a false allegation threatens not just Reed’s freedom but the love we’ve rekindled, I’ll do whatever it takes to find the real culprit and clear Reed’s name.

Because this time, I’m not walking away.

4 stars

Great to return to the ranch again and see the characters I have a connection to. Leon and Reed are quieter and more subtle than the other couples, and have a slow build up to rekindling their relationship. It felt a little bit long in places but overall a very enjoyable listen. Michael Dean is excellent as always.

Second chance

I love second chance stories and this is a good one!
Last Chance Love is the third book in the Isaiah Ranch series and it can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading at least the second volume first. Romeo Alexander's writing style is wonderful and I was able to immerse myself in Reed and Leon's story very quickly. They were inseparable in their youth until Reed moved away to go to medical school. They lost sight of each other.
Leon had a difficult time because he was taking care of his two younger brothers.
Both Leon and Reed end up in prison, but get a second chance at Isaiah Ranch.
There they meet again after all these years and it takes a long time for them to reconnect. But they realize that the sparks are still flying. It is wonderful to see how more develops between the two of them.
But their happiness is clouded by events that threaten to tear them apart.
I really liked the relatable main characters, but the secondary protagonists are also very interesting. I also like the setting of Isaiah Ranch.
The plot starts slowly, the tension builds and there are unforeseen twists that keep the suspense high.

Michael Dean has done an amazing job as always. He brought the characters to life and it was a pleasure to listen to him. I was able to distinguish the protagonists well. Michael read in an entertaining way and gave the protagonists suitable voices.

An immersive story experience

Isaiah Ranch is a new favourite place of mine, which may sound strange given the fact that it is a place for convicts to try and find a way to reform, to be ready for the world outside. But, it is an important place, a place where these men are doing their very best and it is also a place where, it appears, bonds can be formed, loving bonds at that.

Reed and Leon are both at the Ranch because, for very different reasons, they fell foul of the law but the Ranch is helping them both to see and do things differently. What we soon discover is that many years ago these two not only knew one another, they were together. But they were young and Leon broke Reed's heart, thinking that he was doing the best thing for both of them. Until we come to 'Last Chance Love' the third title in the series we only have glimpses of the pair of them, hints at their roles on the Ranch and no hints at all at their lives before it or the reasons for them being here. Now that is all about to change. Now we see the Ranch from their perspective and we also see them making amends, not only for their crimes but for the hurt they caused one another.

Listening to Michael Dean narrate another story in this series brings it once again to life. Hearing these characters not in my own mind but with their personalities vocalised, for me it transforms the story. I loved reading it but there was no way I would skip listening to it. To hear the emotions that Michael Dean gives these characters, to feel how he brings them to life, to be taken back to the Ranch once again, there is no feeling like it.

And, with the story of Leon and Reed being such an emotional and passionate one, with so much hurt to heal, comfort to be given and for a crime to be uncovered, listening brings it to such vibrant life. The story is the same in print or in audio but somehow listening to this one, the third in the series, having read and then listened to them all, has made me feel closer to all the characters. I feel that Michael Dean and Romeo Alexander have given us a gift, the gift of an impressive, immersive story experience, one that I know will stay with me and I know without a doubt I will be going back to and getting more from each and every time.

excellent

4.5 stars. I've always enjoyed listening to this narrator and in my opinion he fits particularly well with this type of book (US ranch/country). Enjoyable ending to a very good series. This book felt lighter than the first two, although the subject matter wasn't. The mystery had an unexpected solution, which I really appreciated. There were a number of sub-plots that featured in the first two books from the perspective of those MCs, this was an interesting technique.
