Summary

The explosive tale of the unraveling of an American president.

For six years, Ronald Reagan seemed invincible. But behind the glowing image of success was an administration courting disaster. In this spellbinding book, two top Washington reporters trace the origins of the Iran-Contra affair and the unraveling of the Reagan presidency, taking us deep inside a white house that cared more for stagecraft than statecraft and that mistook a landslide reelection for an unlimited mandate.

Here is the startling illumination of power and personality, an explosive tale of a president’s unmaking - and a landmark book about the current state of the American presidency.

Landslide victories are often poison to the winner

This book was originally written as Ronald Reagan's presidency was coming to an end and I found it to be a refreshing real time account of his time in the white house. The authors clearly are Liberal but they reflect what was often said about Reagan by some Conservatives while he was in office.

Primarily focused on the 1984 landslide and the Iran- Contra scandal which almost ended the 40th Presidents administration. I enjoyed a listening to a view of the Reagan era which has been overwhelmed by the avalanche of hagiography and fawning biographies.

Due to when it was written some of the conclusions can now be seen to be wrong due to subsequent information coming to light and therefore I would suggest people who listen to this audiobook keep in mind that it was written in the 1980's. The narration is excellent and I enjoyed this audiobook while being able to recognise the flaws in knowledge and lack of perspective only time can bring.
