With the death of a young black man, Walt and Ox are dragged into the eye of a storm as Kansas City erupts in violence and demonstrations.

Author Robert Thornhill's gloriously funny series about the elderly cop, Walt Williams, his partner Ox, and his assortment of curious friends, has frequently also raised thought provoking issues. But this book is darker than the earlier stories as he and Ox are involved in a shooting which threatens to bring large scale racial violence to Kansas City. To remove them temporarily from the public eye, the couple, with their wives, are sent on a two weeks, work related, luxury holiday - and straight into violence of another sort: the 2014 hurricane which hits their holiday location within two days of their arrival. There they experience first hand how desperation can affect even the most law abiding men.
Although still retaining the wonderfully lugubrious style and flashes of comedy, Walt here is more world weary, his musings less certain that he can continue to fight for lady justice. As in all of the earlier books, George Kuch is Walt Williams, delivering the first person recounting with impeccable talking-to-the-listener-personally style. He catches all of the nuances, the humour, the fears and small successes perfectly.

A darker story than it's earlier counterparts, this is still a book I highly recommend both for the thrills, the friendships and the subject matter itself. The whole series never disappoints.

This was quite a different story for Walt Williams and his gang. I did enjoy it but as it is such a serious subject I didn't think it was as funny as previous books. I liked the in sight into living in a disaster zone and how people pull together to survive. The strong bond between friends is very strong in this book and is heart warming.
When Walt and his partner are involved in an officer shooting, tension in Kansas city is tested with racism the hot topic. To cool things down they are given leave and sent on a working holiday. To relax in luxury with there wives but keep an eye out for an employee selling drugs to tourists. Before the pair can even unpack there suitcase a hurricane hits the holiday resort and another fight for survival ensures. Back at home things are not calming down and when the bedraggled couples return home they spark another incident that could burn Kansa City down to the ground. Can everything be seen in black or white? Or is there a compromise that will please both sides that divide a city.
George Kuch does a good job with his narration and helps the book run smoothly.
