Critic reviews

"Sensational melodrama at its best....the tale sustains its suspense to the very end and wins our sympathy for the erring Lady Lucy." ( The Times)
"It's gripping stuff, not least for what it reveals about Victorian attitudes to psychology, and is relished in every dramatic plot twist by Juliet Stevenson, who enjoys keeping the listener guessing until the final revelation." ( The Sunday Times)
"Set in London society and among the eerie Thames at night, and the mountainous London dustheaps, it is a many-layered story: a fugue on the corruption of wealth, an attack on social climbers, a plea for better treatment of sick children and the aged poor."( The Times)

Totally enjoyable!

Charming, engaging story with something more to it than other historical mysteries I have read. I loved the way 'the secret' gradually began to emerge and the underlying grittiness that avoids the usual sweetness of these types of stories. Brilliant narration as always by Juliet Stevenson, a really excellent actress.
I chose this title purely on a whim and I am very glad I did as it proved to be a real treat.....

Brilliant narration by Juliet Stevenson

I hadn't read Lady Audley's Secret but am required to read it for my MSt. degree. Juliet Stevenson's narration is excellent and brings out all the nuances in this well-written novel. I went out and bought the book immediately for the Introduction and footnotes - the only problem I have with 'hearing' rather than 'reading'.

Gripping

This is one of the best stories I've listened to in ages - very well paced with twists and surprises all the way through which all come together and make sense at the end. Juliette Stevenson also has a wonderful reading voice and very well suited to the story.

Perfect Victorian Mystery

Would you listen to Lady Audley's Secret again? Why?
Yes: Have listened to this 'Three Times' and just about to listen again. I adore Victorian melodrama which this basically is with it's background of 'Love, Betrayal and Murder all set in the usual huge Manor House. Old man marries youg women, is her background suspicious? Is she or is isn't the beautiful young wife all that she seems and IS MEANT to be for a woman of her high position.

Who was your favorite character and why?
The Wife; who is so beautiful and calm on the outside but complex and a bag of explosives on the inside. She is a paradox : a wonder and carries it off to aplomb.

What does Juliet Stevenson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Juliet is a professional actress with a warm appealing voice which she can tune into what ever character she needs to be. She is calm and therefore gluides you along deep into each of the characters personality male or female. Unlike a lot of narrators, Juliet does not rush her lines, she acts them out just as she would on stage. She cares about her performance.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. I always make sure I am in a position where I have all the hours needed to relax as I become totally absorbed into the storyline. This way, it is like you are there experiencing the play first hand. I am a trained actress and like to get the 'whole feel' of the atmosphere.

Lets have many more excellent narrators like this whom can bring literature alive.

Classic story

Classic story; beautifully read. I liked this abridged version - there’s plenty here, it doesn’t feel rushed.

Fantastic narration, predictable book

So the book itself may not be not the best piece of prose ever written, although Juliet Stevens might be a good enough reason to listen through it - she' just brilliant!
