Summary

Une nuit de novembre, à Paris, Jean-Baptiste Clamence, traversant un pont sur la Seine, entend le cri d’une femme qu’il vient de croiser. Celle-ci s’est jetée dans le fleuve et se noie. Il continue son chemin et ne fait rien pour la sauver. Mais comment continuer à vivre après ? Le mur des certitudes d’une vie riche et brillante se lézarde. Jean-Baptiste Clamence sombre. Après maintes expériences pour tenter d’oublier cette funeste rencontre, ce cri déchirant, cette existence à jamais disparue, il se retire dans un bar à matelots d'Amsterdam où il devient juge-pénitent.

François Berland est le lecteur de ce long et admirable monologue. Il est Jean-Baptiste Clamence, ancien avocat de renom qui se livre à une confession sous forme de prise de conscience. Une lecture sobre et poignante.
