La casa in collina' è una delle opere più note di Cesare Pavese. Pubblicato nel 1949, il romanzo riprende e sviluppa dai racconti "La famiglia" e ‘Il fuggiasco' - scritti qualche anno prima e inseriti alla fine del romanzo stesso - temi, personaggi e situazioni. Introspettivo e doloroso, racconta l'orrore della guerra e della morte, sviluppa il tema della solitudine e dell'impossibilità di partecipare alla storia senza più compromessi o giustificazioni. Protagonista è Corrado, professore che, per sfuggire ai bombardamenti in città della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, trova rifugio sulle colline piemontesi. Distante e quasi apatico nei confronti di quello che sta accadendo, trascorre le giornate passeggiando in collina, e un giorno arriva all'osteria Alle Fontane, dove incontra Cate, suo amore di gioventù, e Dino, il giovane figlio di lei. Corrado inizia a frequentare l'osteria e i suoi avventori, ma la serenità e la spensieratezza sono destinate a crollare all'indomani dell'armistizio. Corrado, scampato all'arresto da parte dei tedeschi per una casualità che gli pare quasi crudele, compie un doloroso ritorno verso casa, in mezzo alla morte e alla distruzione della guerra civile, che non riesce a spiegarsi.
