Summary

McEvoy tombe dans le piège d'un terrible assassin.

À cause de difficultés financières au Los Angeles Times, le journaliste Jack McEvoy va être licencié. Amer, il décide de partir en fanfare et commence un article qui, il en est sûr, devrait lui valoir le prix Pulitzer.

Pourtant, l'affaire semble banale : Alonzo Winslow, un dealer de seize ans, est accusé de viol et de meurtre... et il a avoué. Mais Jack comprend vite que ces aveux pourraient bien avoir été extorqués à l'adolescent par une police désireuse d'améliorer ses statistiques.

Il comprend aussi que s'attaquer seul au LAPD serait bien téméraire et fait appel à l'agent du FBI Rachel Walling, le grand amour de sa vie, pour retrouver le véritable assassin. Cependant, ce dernier se révèle être un tueur redoutable, qui a l'air de tout savoir de McEvoy. Et qui l'attend de pied ferme.
