Summary

In Journeys North, legendary trail angel, thru hiker, and former PCTA board member Barney Scout Mann spins a compelling tale of six hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2007 as they walk from Mexico to Canada. This ensemble story unfolds as these half-dozen hikers - including Barney and his wife, Sandy - trod north, slowly forming relationships and revealing their deepest secrets and aspirations. They face a once-in-a-generation drought and early severe winter storms that test their will in this bare-knuckled adventure. In fact, only a third of all the hikers who set out on the trail that year would finish.

As the group approaches Canada, a storm rages. How will these very different hikers, ranging in age, gender, and background, respond to the hardship and suffering ahead of them? Can they all make the final 60-mile push through freezing temperatures, sleet, and snow, or will some reach their breaking point?

Journeys North is a story of grit, compassion, and the relationships people forge when they strive toward a common goal.

The PCT text. The one

Some thru hiking books we tolerate to feed our addictions.

This book is is not the usual.... it's pure unadulterated thru hike culture. the real deal. it is masterful and has everything you're looking for in terms of excitement, history, emotion, feeling as if you're there with the characters we all love...knowledge and wisdom for newbies and hardcore heads alike.

the passion for the community and responsibility for it's members shines through...complex and gorgeous, brimming with details, anecdotes, with a huge variety of stories and tear inducing moments capturing the trail masterfully in a complex interwoven view, you know the hikers.... told by scout who is such an integral part of PCT history.... I'm not quite done with it yet cos I will be listening again I'm sure. then I'll read it I know

Quality and Excellent delivery

A lovely and interesting layered story. Very descriptive in terms of the environment and emotions of the characters.

Combine this with a passionate delivery, telling a story rather than just reading the words.

Thank you for and excellent book!

Travel without moving

Very uplifting tale of a massive walking challenge. It’s all the better for viewing the walk through the different characters who took the challenge on at the same period. Well written and well told.

A gem.

My fascination with the PCT began with Wild. I am in awe of everyone who through hikes the whole length. This audiobook was a delightful mix of characters and stories, giving me all of the feels of the wonder of this epic hike through epic country.

I listened until it was finished

This is a special book. To have walked the PCT, and then finish a whole novel, both are outstanding.

listening from Scotland, hope to hike myself some day. Thank you.

Wonderful!

My favourite adventure book so far, the narrators voice was wonderful and matched the content perfectly, and I was fully engrossed and invested in the journeys of all of the hikers. It really was a joy to listen to the adventures of so many wonderful people, and the kindness and courage they shared, just perfect ❤

very disappointing

I was dismayed by how much of the story is about young hikers hooking up and a detailed account of a rape. That is when I removed it from my library. glad I did not waste a credit on it

Cannot offer a higher recommendation.

Ever wanted to hike the PCT but couldn't because of a global pandemic? Scout takes you with him in this book. Its intimate and gritty, funny and realistic, heartbreaking and heartwarming. I found myself welling up with tears (i won't spoil if they were of sadness or joy) when their journey came to and end. A must-read for anyone who fancies through hiking.

Excellent story and performance.

I enjoyed this book so much. Every hiker was described in a way that painted a clear picture of the hiker, and made it easy for readers to understand reasons that put them on a trail, which made it interesting to see their transformation.
Reading was great. I liked the voice, punctuation, ease, and a storytelling mood in the voice.
Story of each hiker were detailed enough to understand them, but also abstract enough for a little bit of welcomed mystery.
I appreciated the epilogue with an update on everyone.

Do Not Miss This Book!!!

Listened to this book in two days while hiking in the Smokey Mountains and local trails- it had me wiping my eyes, cheering them on and remembering many hikes in California, Oregon and Washington.
I’m not a through hiker but, I listen to just about any book on hiking adventures and this book and Wild, by Cheryl Strayed (whom I’ve met now) are life changing books. Unforgettable real characters and awe-inspiring people.
Don’t miss this one… it’s a gem of a book- rock solid diamond! Especially if your a dreamer, hiker or someone that needs some inspiration.

Wow

What a gifted story teller! The narrator was perfect! There isn’t a thing I would change (except whoever added later recordings of some passages by the narrator. It was very noticeable) I loved every minute of this book!

Tells the story of the trail community

I loved this book and how it weaves together several hikers stories. There are many books that tell an individual's account of their adventure on the PCT but Scout has managed to capture the essence of the thru hiking experience with several intertwined compelling narratives, including what brings people to the trail and the emotional weight they carry with them.

Good story but a mechanical reading

Perhaps my expectations of this book were too lofty. With the subject matter of human perseverance in some of this countries most beautiful and challenging terrain, I was hoping the content and telling would be up to the task.
There were good characters and some character development. It was the reading that just left me flat due to its mechanical and uninspired story telling.
I’m glad I listened all the way through.

Phenomenal book about Thru hiking the PCT

This is an amazing book about the journey of Thru hiking the PCT, Pacific Crest Trail. I could not stop listening, day or night. Scout successfully takes us with him on this journey, and introduces us to everyone he and Frodo meet along the way. It is realistic, heartwarming, and at times heartbreaking, but so real. It is a must if you are interested in hiking in any realm. He ends the book bringing us up to date with how all of the hikers in the story are doing now. I loved “listening” to it on Audible, it brought it even more to life. I can’t wait to read Barney’s other books as well.
