About this listen

Veteran director John Badham explains the elements of action and suspense and dissects the essentials of any good scene from any genre. Badham's list of "12 Questions You Must Ask Before Stepping on Set" is an absolute must in any filmmaker’s toolbox. Whether actor, director, cinematographer, production designer, or any other creative, Badham gives you the tools to deconstruct and solve scenes that either don’t work or need sharpening. Continuing the work begun in his best-selling book I'll Be in My Trailer, Badham shares more insights into working with difficult actors, rehearsal techniques, and getting the best performance from your cast.

Simply one of the best books on directing. It's about directing and not about story structure or how to create great characters etc. which of course a director should know about, but it's way more practical and it's about what a director needs to do in preparation, on set and in post production to make the most honest and realistic representation of the story. It's about how to work with the cast and crew to tell a story. It's more like a university masterclass with a very experienced professor who is sharing his methods for directing. It's one of the best in this category and I'd say it's a must for people who are new to directing or who are in the early stage in their careers.

A must for aspiring directors

Some directors only think about actors not the technical side. This book is mostly about managing people. There's some small information about tension and suspense. but nothing new if you've read widely in this area. I work in film and this book was a big disappointment. if you direct actors and need help with that, this book will be very helpful. If you want anything else, look elsewhere.

Mostly about directing actors
