Summary
AUDIO EXCLUSIVE: INCLUDES THE SONG “ELATION STATION” BY INFECTED MUSHROOM!
A “fascinating and very moving” (Aaron Sorkin, award-winning screenwriter of The West Wing and The Social Network) chronological timeline spanning from Biblical times to today that explores one of the most interesting countries in the world—Israel.
Israel. The small strip of arid land is 5,700 miles away but remains a hot-button issue and a thorny topic of debate. But while everyone seems to have a strong opinion about Israel, how many people actually know the facts?
Here to fill in the information gap is Israeli American Noa Tishby. But “this is not your Bubbie’s history book” (Bill Maher, host of Real Time with Bill Maher). Instead, offering a fresh, 360-degree view, Tishby brings her “passion, humor, and deep intimacy” (Yossi Klein Halevi, New York Times bestselling author of Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor) to the subject, creating an accessible and dynamic portrait of a tiny country of outsized relevance. Through bite-sized chunks of history and deeply personal stories, Tishby chronicles her homeland’s evolution, beginning in Biblical times and moving forward to cover everything from WWI to Israel’s creation to the disputes dividing the country today. Tackling popular misconceptions with an abundance of facts, Tishby provides critical context around headline-generating controversies and offers a clear, intimate account of the richly cultured country of Israel.

An absolute must read.
Fantastic book. A great explanation of Israel and perfect whether you love, hate or are indifferent about her. A clear and sensible explanation and an unpicking of the confusions and misunderstandings that surround this tiny yet mammoth country.

Best audiobook I’ve listened to in a long time
Excellent book and a must-read, especially now when conflicts have spiked recently. Don’t let yourself be misguided by the media and by public opinion. Through this very necessary book, along with some serious research if you wish, you’ll be able to get the facts straight and understand what’s behind this long history of conflicts. I can’t thank Noa enough for this masterpiece. And her performance is flawless! Best listen of the year so far.

Way too biased
This is just a ridiculous book. I have absolutely no preference for or against Israel but this book is so biased that it serves the opposite purpose as what it tries to achieve. According to the author Israel is by far the best country in the world and has never done anything wrong. Completely unconvincing. Don’t waste your time.

Next Level Confirmation Bias
This book is neither a historical account, nor a balanced view of the state of Israel and the Palestinian conflict . There’s no history, it is a political tirade and a classic example of confirmation bias, with the author conveniently ignoring anything that does not support her point of view.
The authors continual claim to be a liberal is laughable. I would describe the views expressed as uncompromising, lacking either empathy or compassion and right wing. The inability to acknowledge the mistakes of the past, particularly is the first half of the 20th century (by all parties) only confirm this.
If you want a load of half truths and alternative facts to make it sound like you know what you’re talking about to someone who doesn’t know anything, this is the book for you. If you want to understand the history in a balanced way and educate yourself, steer well clear.

A wonderful and important work
Noa Tishby deserves great credit for writing this fascinating and detailed account of Israel, from before its creation to the present day. She makes no apology for being a passionate Israeli herself, yet clearly understands the many difficulties facing Arabs and Jews as they try to share the Middle East.

Required listening
Picks up on the only part of the puzzle that David Baddiel’s excellent book chose to leave out. Without both you cannot understand.

insightful and a must read/listen
Such an insightful book, I’m gonna be honest I decided to listen to this to get a better understanding of Israel and the war currently going on. It didn’t disappoint, it’s really opened my eyes to Israel’s past, present and makes me hope and pray for the future of the Israeli’s and the Jewish people.
Also I was gobsmacked finding the truth of BDS and who is funding it. A must listen for everyone!
Noa you are a star shining a light on a very misunderstood part of the world!
Thank you for writing this!

A well written book beautifully read.
Factual and also entertaining. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was hooked from the beginning. The author who is also the narrator is wonderful. I highly recommend this title.

FINALLY I HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THIS CONFLICT
Noa Tishby explains the history of the Jewish people from biblical times to the present day. I wanted to understand what has caused the ongoing conflict between the Jews and Muslims and wanted it explaining in a way I could understand. This book does that. It is a good book and I am glad I bought it. If I have a complaint it is the unnecessary swearing she feels the need to use but then books these days seem to be under the impression that throwing in the occasional swear word improves the story. Sorry it doesn’t it merely serves to cheapen the book if it cannot be written without it. Also I found the undercurrent of Wokeism rather irritating.

Perfect overview
This book is everything I hoped.
It manages to encapsulate so much history and information and neatly present it with a bow as well as truly capture us Israelis as people, our nature and our story.
Highly recommend to anyone who wishes to truly understand Israel, Israelis, Judaism, the conflict etc.
With so much negative discourse around the world it would be my wish for more people to pick up this book to gain further knowledge and perspective. Only with tolerance will we have an better collective future.
