About this listen

From the introduction of Greek Philosophy into the Muslim world in the eighth century, right through to modern times, Majid Fakhry charts the evolution and interaction of philosophy, theology, and mysticism in the Islamic context. Highlighting key individuals, movements, concepts and writings, Fakhry also explores the conflicts and controversies between anti- and pro-philosophical parties that have characterised the development of Islamic thought.©1997 Majid Fakhry (1st Edn) (P)2012 Bolinda Publishing History Islam Philosophy Religious Studies

Editor reviews

Majid Fakhry condenses centuries of thought surrounding philosophy and its role within Islam in this illuminating collection, a must-listen for beginners hoping to learn more about the religion. Fakhry explores the introduction of Greek philosophy into Islam around the eighth century, highlights important texts and figures in the movement, discusses the controversies surrounding philosophical thought amongst Muslims, and shows what role it has within modern Islam. Fakhry provides brilliant insight, delivered with an authoritative tone by Raad Rawi, who has a professorial air. Rawi's voice is also melodious and fluid throughout, making this comprehensive introduction a marvelous listen.

Critic reviews

"Provides the reader with an excellent, concise overview of Islamic philosophy, theology, and mysticism … Fakhry has accomplished the task of presenting the central themes and the essence of 1400 years of intellectual tradition in a clear, coherent manner." (Philosophy East and West)

I really enjoyed this work, though I found getting your head around and remembering all the names difficult in an audio book! I had to Google a lot of them when I got to work just to help the names stick in my head! As an introduction I really enjoyed this and it was helpful in contextualising the interplay between Western and Islamic philosophy too. I'd recommend.

Really good introduction for a beginner.
