The CIA closes in on an escaped Nazi hiding out in Panama

The CIA sends Hartman because he knows the target’s face. Hartman spent two years in Bergen-Belsen and knows camp commandant Fritz Lang’s face better than anyone. The Nazi has taken up residence in a Panamanian port, supplementing his realtor’s salary with monthly infusions from a numbered Swiss account. Despite Lang’s extensive plastic surgery, Hartman recognizes him. It’s a face he could never forget, and it’s time to make him pay.

Rumors have circulated that, in the waning days of World War II, a KGB operative helped Lang and others escape the wrath of the Red Army in exchange for massive bribes. That operative is now the KGB’s top man, and getting the dirt on him would mean destabilizing all of Russian intelligence. Hartman’s task is not to arrest Lang, but to spook him and follow when he runs.

The story

I came across this for free in the Audible Plus catalogue by an author I had not heard of before. So my expectations were not high. I was very pleasantly surprised. It is a spy story that crackles along very engagingly. The main character is credible; flawed without any of the tropes that haunt this often hackneyed genre. OK, there are a few moments where one light slightly question how things work, but much less than in many better-known novels.

Well read, this is a steal.

Beautifully drawn characters drawn together in this story that crosses time and places - and the craziness of regimes.

The narrator's monotone when reading the narrative was balanced out by his great characterisation in the dialogue.

Rather disappointing if inevitable ending.

More drama and intrigue set in east Europe and Russia with jaunts into the Americas. Twists, turns, dramas and the forever sadness that suits the political chaos and bleak Russian landscape. Love and separation, corruption and evil are the challenges faced by the heroes and heroines in yet another gripping potboiler from this author who seems to have an endless source of new, inventive and engaging narratives to share.
