Summary

New York Times best-selling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

The ocean is home to many myths,

But some are deadly....

Seven years ago the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a mockumentary bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a tragedy.

Now a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart, this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will be found only below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

Too long

Narrator was good apart from the horrible Australian accent.
The story was too long for what it was and not bloody enough. More named characters should have gotten eaten.

Amazing Aquatic Horror

This book is full with interesting characters, detailed science, suspense and terrifying moments. It was an absolute treat and I enjoyed every minute of it.

A Good Editing Away from 4/5

After thoroughly enjoying Rolling In The Deep (the shorted prequel to Into The Drowning Deep) I was left a little disappointed by the pacing and characters, in what is otherwise a very enjoyable Sci-Fi-Mermaid ?thriller.

The mermaids are excellent. Described in excellent prose that builds an expansive and unnerving picture of a predator. Whenever they were on-screen they were a delight, even if occasional plot-convenience would leave you feeling a sense of anti-climax.

The marine science, the speculative science, the medical aspects were all interesting and well written. It shines when describing the Sirens, their movements and machinations. One cannot overstate how impressive it is to write mermaids as a legitimate and interesting sci-fi threat.

The human characters (as others have said) left something to be desired. Yes, the cast is diverse to a fault, but multiple POV and re-treading moments in time causes the flow to crash after the first act. Soap-opera elements and underwritten characters lead to a meandering plot where I found myself desperate for more killer mermaids, more death. I’m not sure that’s the goal here.

Finally the meandering prose and constant repetitive rumination would slow the occasionally interesting character scenes to a crawl. Internal monologues would appear in between a flowing conversation and you would find yourself waiting for the plot to return.

In short it feels very much like a standard Godzilla movie. Flat and uninteresting characters serve only to propel the much more exciting monster plot, as sparse as that might be. Edited down to reduce the superfluous interpersonal drama and to sharpen the pace I could easily see Into The Drowning Deep rising to a 4 star book.

Excellent narration. Good characterisations considering the limited nature of some of the character.

Childish writing style

Good story but the writing style is unbearable at times, overly flowery in a teenage girl way. Poor attempt at unnecessary prose that reads very juvenile. I liked the story and the idea behind it but the bad prose stagnated the plot and kills any suspense making it a bit dull. Narrator is struggles with various accents especially Australian which makes for awkward listening.

Awesome story

Fun audiobook with lots of vivid scenes. Felt like the author had done lots of cool research on marine biology. Biggest issue was that the POV shifts made it difficult for me to get attached to any of the characters, but the great suspense and tension made up for it!

Good story with annoying bits

The story itself was nice, easy to digest, not too slow and appropriate to listen to while doing chores etc. Narrator did good even with the accents. Main critique is that it had some very cringey moments where adult characters acted like in a YA novel, and there were quite a few. Second is that a story is mainly about the science aspect; it needed more actually scifi nerd angle in the writing, now it seemed like a filler, and gave little believable explanations for the genre scifi-horror. The ending twist was nice but came too late.

Mind numbing

Angry, irrational characters making ridiculous, contrived decisions, and repetitive exposition throughout made this a real slog. Shame, as the premise held promise, but the execution was dreadful.

Great take on a mermaid tale

Went into this without knowing much but as a recommendation from a horror book club. I enjoyed the theme very much, lots of science talk that can go over your head a bit but is easy to glide over when listening. Not as gory as I thought it would be & not much at the end. Still very enjoyable with likable characters.
Good performance from the narrator but please, don't try an Aussie accent again! Utterly awful 😂 other than that, a great book & I will read more from this author.

Amazing

I half read half listened to this book for various reasons and loved every second of it. I just couldn't put it down. The characters are great, the story compelling, the atmosphere delightfully claustrophobic and the science brilliantly described.
The narrator does a fantastic job in her tone, her reading, fleshing out characters and giving the story all the power of terror it deserves.
(My only little laugh was for the Australian accent that was... not quite there, as well as the French-quebecois accent that sounded more Slavic than French).
I wish there were more books like this!
