Summary
When two teenagers - Johannes and Mari - are found murdered inside their school, in the small Norwegian village of Fredheim, the finger is soon is pointed at 18-year-old Even, whose relationship with Mari ended just before she died.
Mari was writing a story for the school newspaper about Even and his dad, who died in a car accident 10 years earlier. But was it really an accident? And had Mari uncovered information that someone was willing to commit murder to protect?
Charged and facing trial, Even pores over his memories of the months leading up to the murders, and it becomes clear that more than one villager was acting suspiciously. And as Even recounts his side of the story, it seems that there may be no one he can trust.
But can we trust him?
A taut, moving and chilling thriller, Inborn examines the very nature of evil, and asks the questions: how well do we really know our families? How well do we know ourselves?

A gem of a book by Thomas Enger
Inborn is such a superb blend of YA and adult fiction; the perfect combination of courtroom drama and small-town murder mystery. This audiobook can be engaging for multiple generations; a great listen for teenagers and adults of all ages!
I loved everything about this book: how part of the story is told through the eyes of Even, a teen who is defending himself against rumours and finger pointing, how Chief Inspector Yngve Mork is still coming to terms with his own loss while trying to make sense of the murders and catch the killer, and how careless social media accusations and secrets can destroy someone’s life. This story has more layers than an onion and I kept changing my mind about the killer as information was drip-fed to me. I was completely absorbed in it.
David Shaw-Parker returns to narrate another one of Thomas Enger's audiobooks and he is simply outstanding.

Not worth it
The motive for the murders of 3 teenagers is hard to buy into. Also, the narrator sounds like an older man, not believable when many of the characters are high school students. Not a worthwhile payoff for the time invested.
