About this listen
Moving house has become a way of life for 15-year-old Isobel Miller. Her father is an Army Major; her mother, a middle aged, pregnant, chain smoking alcoholic. But the move to the village of Langham could be the straw that broke the camel's back. To the truculent teenager it might as well have been to Timbuktu. Isobel is resentful of the baby, angry with her mother for dragging her away from civilization to live in a village that has no street lighting, let alone any decent shops.
The only light in her miserable existence is her grandfather, story-teller elite, her saviour. And when one of his macabre tales is mentioned in the local paper, Isobel is drawn into the depths of evil and devil worship. Her world, and that of everyone around her, turns upside down. The cause? A mysterious book, an omen, which once opened and read starts a cataclysmic chain of events, and their lives are filled with tragedy and disaster. Salvation comes in the guise of three other teenagers - Peter, Oswald, and Ariel - and the four form a bond so strong nothing can tear apart - nothing except maybe the devil himself!
May be listened to as a standalone.
Second Edition. New and improved sound quality.

Fantasy and Sci fi casserole
Demons and angels? Check. Aliens and UFOs? Check. Dire wolves, dragons, ghost, plagues, time travel? Check, check, check and check.
If you were to toss every fantasy sci-fi trope into a blender, put in a buttered pan and bake at 400 degrees for 40 minutes, this is the leftover casserole of peculiarities that you would get.
The story was interesting and worth telling. But while I asumme this was intinded for an older audience, it is maybe more suitable for younger listeners around the ages of 12-15. Thers is violence but I've seen significantly worse in other books aimed at this age group, so nothing to really fret about.
The story is about a group of misfit friends who are suddenly met with tragedy when one of their group is thought to drown in a river. Around the same time a magic book is uncovered which sets off a chain of events that hurtles the protagonists through time and space as their world is over run by a plauge and then an army of demons led by an evil Bishop intent on taking over the world. The plucky ragtag teams must fight to survive in this world where pretty much everything is trying to kill them from monsters to allies.
Characters are not spared as they are picked off one by one. I would encourage more character development of both main and secondary characters allowing for growth and development before they are immulated in demon fire. Also, maybe check continuity and story flow, and remember not to add things just for the element of surprise as more is not always better. The narrator takes a while to get used too but before you know it, you are chugging along at a good pace.
Overall the story is fun once it truly gets going. A bit all over the place but still interesting how it realistically handles what happens when you pit a kid against an army of demi-god demon vampires, it ain't going to be good for the kid.
The author does make an odd choice of leaving the first book on a cliffhanger, and then immediately making the second book a prequel, but I guess I'll just have to continue down that rabbit hole and see where it takes me.

Really good!
I love this book, the idea and story! The narration could have been a little bit better, the mother sounded like an old man. I didn't even realize it was third person!

In the Devil's own word
I totally enjoyed this book. It is full with new and imaginative ideas. The teenage characters are all struggling with their own inner demons. They were able to changed and developed in response to events.

Not a light listen
In the relatively short length of the book the author manages to create a thoroughly complex world with deep characters, without sacrificing the story. Religion, science, and the supernatural are seamlessly blended together throughout the book. Normally I would shy away from this combination, however, the author has managed to balance them well weaving them together in a believable way. The resulting world is dark and the characters flawed, whilst they struggle against the coming darkness.
If you are looking for a light and cheerful story then this is not for you. There are no happy endings here, just struggle and survival wrapped in an excellent and well narrated story.
