Summary

Geralt di Rivia ha fallito. Durante la rivolta scoppiata sull'isola di Thanedd, non è riuscito a portare in salvo Ciri, l'ultima erede al trono di Cintra, e ora la principessa è scomparsa. La sua unica speranza di ritrovarla è affidarsi a Milva, la più abile spia delle driadi. E Milva non lo delude: scopre che Ciri è prigioniera dell'imperatore Emhyr var Emreis e si offre di guidare lo strigo fino alla capitale di Nilfgaard.

Benché sia ancora debole a causa delle ferite riportate, Geralt lascia la sicurezza dei boschi di Brokilon e si mette in viaggio con Milva, ma bastano pochi giorni di cammino per rendersi conto che raggiungere il palazzo imperiale è un'impresa quasi impossibile: ovunque infuriano violente battaglie tra le truppe di Nilfgaard e gli eserciti dei liberi regni; le strade sono pattugliate giorno e notte da ronde di soldati, mentre i villaggi sono lasciati alla mercé dei gruppi di elfi ribelli.

Lo strigo e la driade sono quindi costretti a tagliare per la foresta, senza sapere che così facendo cadranno nella trappola preparata da una creatura che da tempo li segue nell'ombra, pronta a tutto pur di evitare che Geralt arrivi vivo a Nilfgaard...
