Summary
Thou shalt not be horrible.
Imagine for a moment what the world might look like if we as people of faith, morality, and conscience actually aspired to this mantra.
What if we were fully burdened to create a world that was more loving and equitable than when we arrived?
What if we invited one another to share in wide-open, fearless, spiritual communities truly marked by compassion and interdependence?
What if we daily challenged ourselves to live a faith that simply made us better humans?
John Pavlovitz explores how we can embody this kinder kind of spirituality where we humbly examine our belief system to understand how it might compel us to act in less-than-loving ways toward others.
In If God Is Love, Don't Be a Jerk, John Pavlovitz examines the bedrock ideas of our religion: the existence of hell, the utility of prayer, the way we treat LGBTQ people, the value of anger, and other doctrines to help all of us take a good, honest look at how the beliefs we hold can shape our relationships with God and our fellow humans - and to make sure that love has the last, loudest word.

Breath of fresh air
After becoming part of the great resignation following nearly two decades working in and for the church, I would describe my relationship with religion as “it’s complicated.” Like many I grew up in church. I think went to a Christian university and then went to work for the church. Throughout all of that time, I changed and I also do THE CHURCH (I.e. organized religion) change in a way that I wouldn’t say was for the better. I connected with this book in so many ways and it was just all of the things I have been thinking and feeling. It was also challenging. THAT is the best type of book. Read this book. You won’t be sorry you did.

Outstanding Book
Best book on “applied” Christianity I’ve read in a long time, maybe ever. Jesus’ simple request for us to “Love one another” is the underlying theme. If our spirits can grow past the man-made dogma, this is the simple message Jesus taught easily summed up in 3-words. The author’s humorous rhetoric made the message enjoyable. I love when audio books are read by the author like this one is.

If God is Love why is this author a jerk
Sounds like propaganda talking points from MSNBC. I hoped this would be a book inspiring us to love like Christ and see all humanity as our brothers and sisters in Christ, uniquely and beautifully created. Instead, the author shows his prejudice and dislike for certain religious groups, republicans, pro-Americans (you can love your country and still equally love others from other countries and support their patriotism for their countries), and generally anyone who seems to have different views from him on a variety of subjects. The message of not putting God in a box and radical love is beautiful, but the author needs to follow his own advice. I found him to be devisive and judgemental and certainly not full of unconditional love! Don't waste your money!!

The Truth
Jesus speaks to me through John. The message isn't new; we're just not living it. Try harder, people! Thanks for the reminder, John!!

Gave me hope
This book gave me hope and maybe a place in my heart for a bigger God. The premise that God is love is so obvious but seemingly lost with many professed Christians right now. Pavlovitz’s beliefs, told through personal stories & examples in accessible language, resonate with me & point me toward being a better human. After reading I can conceive the possibility of moving back towards a spirituality I’ve lost in recent years. I recommend this book for anyone who recognizes the need for love & kindness in our world.

A fantastic and entertaining story about how to be truly Christ like in an America filled with far too many professed and hypocritical “Christians.” This book explains precisely why I left two Evangelical, tRump churches and now practice my faith and belief in Jesus daily and authentically by meeting people where they are.
