Summary

Fuori è l'estate luminosa e insopportabile di luglio quando Amande Luzin, trent'anni, entra per la prima volta nella casa che ha affittato nelle campagne francesi dell'Auvergne. Ad accoglierla, come una benedizione, trova finestre sbarrate, buio, silenzio; un rifugio. È qui, lontano da tutti, che ha deciso di nascondersi dopo la morte improvvisa di suo marito e della bambina che portava in grembo.

Fuori è l'estate ma Amande non la guarda, non apre mai le imposte. Non vuole più, nella sua vita, l'interferenza della luce. Finché, in uno di quei giorni tutti uguali, ovattati e spenti, trova alcuni strani appunti lasciati lì dalla vecchia proprietaria, Madame Lucie: su agende e calendari, scritte in una bella grafia tonda, ci sono semplici e dettagliate indicazioni per la cura del giardino, una specie di lunario fatto in casa. La terra è lì, appena oltre la porta, abbandonata e incolta.
