Summary

Two friends on opposite sides of the aisle provide a practical guide to grace-filled political conversation while challenging listeners to put relationship before policy and understanding before argument.

More than ever, politics seems driven by conflict and anger. People sitting together in pews every Sunday have started to feel like strangers, loved ones at the dinner table like enemies. Sarah Stewart Holland and Beth Silvers say there is a better way.

As working moms on opposite ends of the political spectrum and hosts of a fast-growing politics podcast, Holland and Silvers have learned how to practice engaging conversation while disagreeing. In I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening), they share principles on how to give grace and be vulnerable when discussing issues that affect families, churches, the country, and the world. They provide practical tools to move past frustration and into productive dialogue, emphasizing that faith should inform the way people engage more than it does the outcome of that engagement.

This urgently needed new audiobook reveals how to talk about politics in a way that inspires rather than angers and that pays spiritual dividends far past election day.

Beautifull book. One of the best in the section about a conversation. Political, but not only.

Super actionable advice for long-term solutions

Loved this. Some really nuanced, hopeful and beautifully laid-out ideas. Each chapter ends with prompt reflection questions and super actionable, reletively short-term actions to take that will deliver long-term positive change. I will certainly be reviewing these chapters again throughout the year while I work through all of them.
Eloquently and charmingly read by the authors.

This book changed my life.

This book changed my life. I was one of those ignorant people that was unable to have a meaningful conversation with anyone who thought differently than me. I pushed away friends and family who didn’t share my views because I was so convinced I was right that it made everyone who disagreed with me immoral. I now see how I was limiting myself and how what I was doing was hurting not only myself but everyone around me. I can’t even put into words how much this book helped me in my every day life. Thank you!

These ladies are such a gift to the political conversation!

Sarah and Beth are talking about our current political climate in a way I don’t see anyone else talking about it. I’m totally guilty of proudly wearing my “team jersey” in my echo chamber, but, of course, know that isn’t sustainable if I’m serious about engaging with friends and colleagues about civic engagement and this country fulfilling its potential. Grateful for their wisdom and compassion and empathy for humans as individuals and this current climate of “my way or the high way”.

Highly recommend!

Two recovering lawyers from different political positions have researched specific issues to put together a wonderful book. I highly recommend listening and sharing with others. We need to learn more about individual issues as well as how to talk about them respectfully!

Disappointed... became very religious

I had really high hopes that this would be enlightening and help with talking with relatives with strong political point of views that differ from mine. It just seemed like a stream of bible versus... just not my thing.

Essential

Essential reading for those who want to have real dialogue and grow in their willingness to see complexity.

I needed this reminder to treat others with grace. Thank you for your calming presence, gentle admonishments and well thought out paradigm shifts towards those goals.

A Must Read to Level Understanding

I wondered at first if this book was 10 years too late. As I moved through each chapter, I acquired tools that were helpful and transformative in trying to have civil, grace-filled political discussions.

Keep it nuanced, y’all.

Ever since I started listening to pantsuit politics, I’ve wished the podcast went on longer and this book in audio form is exactly that! I love having Beth and Sarah in my ears speaking calmly and nuanced about topics not many people can speak calmly and nuanced about. Their advice, in my opinion, balances perfectly sharing their experiences and offering advice without being “too preachy.” This book is short, sweet and to the point. And the audiobook performance is fabulous I’m sure due in part to the fact they’ve been podcasting for years. I don’t know them personally and yet I’m so so so proud of them for this. Proud, and grateful. Grateful for the tools laid out in this book and the immense thought and care that obviously went into creating it. I will also be buying a physical copy because, while it doesn’t read like a textbook, it sure could be used like one.

Good Discussion Material

The production quality of this audiobook is top-notch. Sarah and Beth speak clearly and confidently.
The content is worthy of discussion, which I think is a main purpose the authors had in mind. Therefore: Mission Accomplished, ladies; great job!
The book and the podcast present the two creators of the content as being on opposing sides of the "political spectrum," but they seem closely aligned in that regard (that is, regarding how much government should be involved in the lives of citizens). Still, the principles presented about how to discuss issues with people who actually are far removed in that viewpoint are valid principles, and that makes this book valuable.
Full disclosure: I cannot legitimately claim to be unbiased in my review, as I consider co-author Sarah a friend. But please do buy this valuable resource, and consider the principles it illuminates. Your conversations on substantive topics may well become more enjoyable, more meaningful, and more fruitful.

Unforgettable

This is absolutely one of the best and most important books I have ever read. It goes so much deeper than “politics” as many think about politics (blue vs red, left vs right, no taxes vs all the taxes) but dives into so many aspects of our daily lives, and is applicable not only during election season, but in our everyday relationships at home, work, school and in the community. THIS SHOULD REQUIRED READING in every high school around the nation!
