THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

As young boys, both Jacques Rebière and Thomas Midwinter become fascinated with trying to understand the human mind. As psychiatrists, their quest takes them from the squalor of the Victorian lunatic asylum to the crowded lecture halls of the renowned Professor Charcot in Paris; from the heights of the Sierra Madre in California to the plains of unexplored Africa.

As the concerns of the old century fade and the First World War divides Europe, the two men's volatile relationship develops and changes, but is always tempered by one exceptional woman; Thomas's sister Sonia.

It's a long and gripping tale but the narration is hard to follow - speech so slurred and rushed I had to listen at 0.9x speed in order to understand. I've not had this problem before on audible - would recommend the book but not this reading

Great story, poorly read

Great story, weaving the development of psychology thinking with a fascinating human narrative. The speed of delivery was too much until I changed to 0,9x, but fine after that.

Brilliant

Beautifully written - astounding psychological and historical research and a compelling narrative - that you can easily switch from a dawning psychoanalytical approach - to neurology - to darwinism- fantastic ! .

The readers capacity to make the novel breathe

An extraordinary, mesmerising novel. What a pity about the narration. Douglas Hodge slurred his way through, not bothering to research the pronunciation of the German words and names, of which there were so many.

What a pity about the narration!

I have so enjoyed this book. Stunning work from Sebastian and the narration made it very real.

brilliant story

…. horrible narration. Better at 0.9x as the words are mangled/rushed/slowed/slurred by turns. The story redeems it I think, but what a shame.

Great story but …

The book is good, I’ve read it before. I bought the audiobook to listen to while working. Unfortunately the narration is extremely difficult to listen to. It’s more like a 23hr monologue than a narration - far too hard to follow; a lot of mumbling, talking too fast, very strange and unnatural prosody. I’ve given up and am returning it :(

Jarring narration

One of the best books I have ever read/listened to. Thank you Mr Faulkes!
