Story
Charmain Baker is in over her head. Looking after Great Uncle William's tiny cottage while he's ill should have been easy, but Great Uncle William is better known as the Royal Wizard Norland and his house bends space and time. Its single door leads to any number of places - the bedrooms, the kitchen, the caves under the mountains, the past, to name but a few. By opening that door, Charmain is now also looking after an extremely magical stray dog, a muddled young apprentice wizard and a box of the king's most treasured documents, as well as irritating a clan of small blue creatures.

The story is narrated by two very different teenagers, who each inhabit two extraordinarily different worlds. Arianrhod Hyde's world (or Roddy, as she prefers to be called) is very much the world of magic, pageantry and ritual. Not unlike Britain in King Arthur's Day, Roddy is daughter of two Court Wizards and therefore part of the King's Progress, travelling round the Islands of Blest and ready to take part in whatever ritual or ceremony is required, as it occurs.

Summary
The beloved modern classic, released as an unabridged audiobook for the first time in 2019.
In the land of Ingary, where seven league boots and invisibility cloaks exist, young Sophie Hatter catches the unwelcome attention of the Witch of the Waste and is put under a spell....
Deciding she has nothing more to lose, Sophie makes her way to the moving castle that hovers on the hills above her town, Market Chipping. But the castle belongs to the dreaded Wizard Howl, whose appetite, they say, is satisfied only by the souls of young girls....
There Sophie meets Michael, Howl’s apprentice, and Calcifer the fire demon, with whom she agrees a pact. Her entanglements with Calcifer, Howl and Michael and her quest to break her curse come alive with Diana Wynne Jones’s unique combination of magic, humour and imagination.

Excellent performance of this lovely book!
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this performance of Diana Wynn Jones's classic book, Kristin Atherton is a lovely narrator, and I hope that she will be able to read the next two titles in this short series.
I've read the book, seen the animated movie (not quite the same as the book but very good), and was so happy that the unabridged audiobook has just been released. I've listened to John Sessions read the next in the series, sadly that was an abridged version.
I'll be looking for other books read by Kristen Atherton.

Hilarious and Heartwarming
SO. GOOD. There was so much life and personality with these characters, all beautifully performed by Atherton. My friend and I spent the last two weeks in isolation after getting back from Europe before heading home listening to this. I'd raved about the book to her before but she'd always forget to read it, so when we were in isolation and I saw that audible FINALLY had a full version of the book instead of the abridged version, how could I resist? We both enjoyed the story and the performance immensely, and I don't think either of us can fully enjoy the Ghibli adaptation after listening to it! As charming and wonderful as movie!Howl is, WHERE IS HIS PERSONALITY?? WHERE IS THE SASS???? WHERE IS HIS WELSH ACCENT????? And more importantly, WHERE IS SOPHIE'S MAGIC?????? The book is incredible and I'd recommend to anyone and everyone if I could. If you've only watched the movie and are curious about what the book is like, just give it a try, you won't regret it.

My childhood favourite
Sometimes, there's nothing like revisiting an all time childhood favourite, such as this one. The first words by the narrator are always critical - does the narration live up to the excellent childhood memory? My first encounter with this store, was the Danish translation as an audio book. I listened on old cassette tapes several times spending hours listening to the stories about Howl, Sophie - and of course - Calcifer. I'd forgotten the book untill recently, when I came across my paper copy during a tidy up. Immediately went to Audible to look for an audio edition of the book. Previously, it had been unavaiable to me for country restrictions, so great was the happiness when I discovered that I could now revisit some of the most cherished imagination memories. If you haven't read or listened to this story yet, I highly recommend it - the very special story and charactors will grow on you and you won't be able to forget them, once the story is over. I, for once, keep looking for Calcifer whenever and wherever there is a fire - because who knows - there might just be a firedemon residing in the flames. Enjoy.
