Don’t just manage your ADHD – thrive with it

If you have, or suspect you have, ADHD, or you simply feel stuck – drowning in half-finished tasks, unhelpful habits and a perpetual feeling that you can’t seem to ‘get it together’ – then this book is for you.

As a leading adult ADHD psychiatrist, who himself has ADHD, Dr James Kustow passionately believes that the goal should not be to just ‘manage’ ADHD, but to thrive with it. This ground-breaking book will allow you to assess if and how the condition affects you, mapping your unique ‘ADHD signature’, before leading you through a seven-pillar plan of small but powerful habit changes. You will learn:

  • How to stabilise your sleep, schedule and surroundings, so you can direct energy to the things that really matter.
  • Easy-to-implement strategies and tools to streamline your life.
  • Simple techniques to calm your mind, reduce the ‘noise’ and achieve your goals, underpinned by a growth-oriented mindset.
  • Practical ways to optimise your nutrition and reduce toxic exposures, to improve brain health.

In small, manageable steps, you can transform the chaos into focus, productivity and balance – for life.

‘Affirming, validating and life-enhancing – if you think you may have ADHD, this book is for you’
– Matt Willis, musician and podcaster

A book which has very useful information about non-pharmacological interventions for adhd

The book was an enjoyable listen for me as someone who supports people with ADHD. The authors style is calm and measured and candid account of his difficulties and what has worked for him add a depth of sincerity to this work. In my view, a mixture of qualitative and quantitative evidence that is presented to help people with ADHD thrive shows the rigour of this work.
A must listen and read for anyone interested in this area. Highly recommended.

ADHD explained for 2024 - as good as it gets.

I've digested a lot of very good resources on ADHD and this has been the breathe of fresh air I needed on the subject. Other books are great too, but this one has the balance. I'm not sure there could be a better source of this info than a late-diagnosed psychiatrist who specialises in the subject in a proffessional capacity! I accept my ADHD as a crippling and disabling disorder, but can never escape some of the amazing, if chaotic, benefits it has been known to bring (don't say superpower....yuk). I feel this book acknowledges that, and offers a pragmatic approach to both sides of the coin. If you want one resource to give to friends and family to explain your challenges better than you, look no further than the intro and opening sections of this book. if I have one criticism it is that I think, at times, the author allows their own ADHD over-optimism and memory issues to cloud their judgement on the substance of the strategies presented in the various pillars. I find the 'just do it' approach is allowed to sneak in at times with things like making to-do lists etc., hence I think the author may have got carried away with their ideas and forgotten in the moment that if we sufferers could do empower these things with determination we probably would have! It's a minor point though and on the flip side it's a reminder that perhaps simple things can help make ADHD manageable. I still give it 5 stars throughout however.

A Practical Guide to Understanding and Managing Adult ADHD

The book is written in an easy-to-understand style, both explaining some of the medical and behavioural aspects of adult ADHD and providing an array of traditional and non-traditional methods for managing the disorder. It is non-judgemental and practical.
The book is so rich in detail and possible therapies, it can seem overwhelming. However, as Dr. Kustow recommends, it should be re-read and broken down in digestible sections, based on an individual’s specific ADHD needs and priorities.
One suggestion for the audiobook: it would be useful to have the resources section included as a written attachment for easier reference.
Another suggestion: a follow up book on how parents, partners and friends can best support loved ones with ADHD.
